Season 5 of ‘Game Of Thrones’ is a long, cold six months away. However, if you need your fix ahead of the winter ahead, producers have officially confirmed a flashback scene! More details and some mild SPOILERS ahead!
Game Of Thrones is about to undergo a huge narrative shift. Where the series previously only took place in the present, relying on the unreliable to tell stories from the past, producers have confirmed in a Q&A with film students in Spain that a true, subjective flashback scene will go down in Season 5. Trust us — that’s exciting, and we’ll explain why. Beware of SPOILERS, however!
‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 5: Flashback Will Open The Season, Likely With Cersei
Not only will there be a flashback, but Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the flashback will open the season (pending changes in the editing room), with the pivotal scene thereby setting a new, exciting tone for the rest of the season.
As WinterIsComing.net points out, “King Robert is utterly convinced that his rebellion for Lyanna was justified, and the Targaryens pure evil,” and we see that attitude reflected in the narrative. We’re given no reason to believe that the rebellion by which Robert earned his throne was anything but justified and honestly won. Readers of the Song Of Ice And Fire series know a little differently, however.
That said, up until now, Game Of Thrones hasn’t directly shown its viewers the bloody past that has influenced its even bloodier present.
‘Game Of Thrones’ Spoilers: Which Scene Will Open Season 5?
Again, we repeat: SPOILERS! We really, super mean it this time.
ASoIaF readers will know that the fact of Cersei’s nude scene being filmed means that Season 5 will be the season of her downfall. That said, there can only be one flashback that opens the season.
Casting rumors have already pointed toward a young Cersei joining the series, and so the flashback will likely center around Cersei and the prophecies that would eventually be her undoing.
When she was young, Cersei visited a fortune teller named Maggy the Frog, who told Cersei: “Queen you shall be… until there comes another, younger and more beautiful, to cast you down and take all that you hold dear.” Sound familiar? Margaery Tyrell is already on her way to taking Cersei’s place in Westeros.
When Cersei asked whether she and her future husband, the King, would bear children, Maggy told her: “Oh, aye. Six-and-ten for him, and three for you. Gold shall be their crowns and gold their shrouds, she said. And when your tears have drowned you, the valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you.”
Robert was well known for having a number of bastard children — 16, in fact — and much like those were just his, Cersei’s children were all hers. All sounds right so far!
Cersei was as thrilled by her prophecies as you might imagine, and threw a potion into Maggy’s face, causing the fortune teller to curse her.
So, basically, Cersei will get hers this season, and this confirmed flashback proves that.
Of course, the season may open with another flashback entirely, but it seems pretty unlikely given the evidence so far.
HollywoodLifers, are you looking forward to the narrative shift this season, or did you enjoy having unreliable narrators dictate Westeros’ bloody past? Let us know!
