How sad. A New Jersey toddler died in his sleep after going to bed with a simple pink eye. It was later determined that it was the mystery Enterovirus that killed him.

Eli Waller, 4, was only suffering from a case of pink eye when he went to bed on Sept. 24 in his Hamilton Township, New Jersey home. Sadly, his parents found him lifeless in bed the following morning, and now a medical examiner claims that the pink eye and the Enterovirus-D68 that killed him were unrelated.

Toddler Dies From Enterovirus After Getting Pink Eye

This is every parent’s worst nightmare.

On Sept. 24, Eli’s parents kept him home from preschool because he was showing signs of pink eye. Unfortunately, his parents had no idea that he would be gone the following day.

According to the Daily Mail, the toddler died in his sleep that night. It wasn’t until Friday, Sept. 26, that Eli’s parents were informed it was the Enterovirus-D68 that took their little boy’s  life. Oddly enough, the medical examiner claimed there was no connection between Eli’s pink eye and the mystery virus.

Although the virus was found in 4 people who died in Sept. 2014, Eli is the first one to lose his life specifically because of the virus.

Enterovirus-D68: How To Avoid Contracting The Disease

Between the Ebola outbreak and Enterovirus-D68, it’s completely understandable that people may be nervous about contracting a deadly disease from anyone they come in contact with.

Thankfully, both illnesses are incredibly easy to avoid — and NBC News has provided 5 easy to follow tips for Americans to stay healthy.

  • Wash hands with soap and water.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
  • Avoid kissing, hugging, and sharing cups, plates and utensils with people who are sick.
  • Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick.

Our thoughts go out to Eli and his family during this very difficult time.
