Raven Symoné Interview — Opens Up About Being Labeled
No topic is off-limits for Raven! Oprah began her interview by referencing a tweet that Raven had sent out in August 2013, that said,”I can finally get married! Yay government! So proud of you.” Oprah asked the talented actress if this had been her way of coming out. She said, “That was my way of saying I’m proud of the country. But, I will say that I’m in an amazing, happy relationship with my partner. A woman.”
Raven added, “People in my family, they’ve taught me to keep my personal life to myself as much as possible. So, I try my best to hold the fence where I can,” she said. “But I am proud to be who I am and what I am.”
Oprah then questioned her about when she knew about her sexuality. Raven answered that she was 12 when she realized. “I was looking at everything.” That being said, Raven declared, “I don’t want to be labeled ‘gay.’ I want to be labeled ‘a human who loves humans.'”
Raven then spoke about labels and her dislike for them in any capacity. She told Oprah, “I’m tired of being labeled. I’m an American. I’m not an African-American; I’m an American.” To which Oprah told her that she was going to rile up Twitter before asking her to explain exactly what she means.
“I mean, I don’t know where my roots go to. I don’t know how far back they go…I don’t know what country in Africa I’m from, but I do know that my roots are in Louisiana,” she said. “I’m an American. And that’s a colorless person.”
Oprah then told her, “You’re going to get a lot of flak for saying you’re not African-American. You know that, right?” Raven continued saying, “I don’t label myself. I have darker skin. I have a nice, interesting grade of hair. I connect with Caucasian. I connect with Asian. I connect with Black. I connect with Indian. I connect with each culture.”
Oprah told her,”You are a melting pot in one body,” to which Raven eloquently said, “Aren’t we all? Isn’t that what America’s supposed to be?”
Raven-Symoné Reveals How She Has Stayed Out Of Trouble
During the same interview with Oprah, Raven dished on how she managed to stay out of trouble as a child star. As HollywoodLife.com previously reported, Oprah asked how she managed to stay out of the tabloids. Raven said, “There’s a few answers. My parents taught me to keep my private life private to the best of my ability,” she said. “They showed me all the role models out there that I could turn into. And what I want for myself in the future.”
She also revealed that she never understood why young stars would go to popular paparazzi filled places. “And seeing all of the child stars going off the edge, what I’ve learned, it’s unnecessary to go to the most popular restaurant in the world when you have a scandal on your head, and then get mad that someone’s gonna take a picture of you,” she told the host. “That’s your fault, boo boo. Stay in the house.”
