It’s finally here! After months of anticipation and a major cast shakeup, Lifetime has released the very first trailer for the network’s upcoming biopic ‘Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B.’ Watch it here!

Lifetime has released the first look at their upcoming biopic, Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B, starring Alexandra Shipp, 23. The Nickelodeon actress stepped into the role, portraying the late Aaliyah, after Disney star Zendaya Coleman shockingly dropped out of the film in July.

The short clip opens with Alexandra alone in a room as Aaliyah. The young actress, who has the R&B performer’s style down pat — showing off her stomach in low-rise pants and a crop top — mimics some of Aaliyah’s iconic moves before she puts on a pair of sunglasses.

The Lifetime original movie is due out Nov. 15.

Unfortunately, the film, based on Christopher Farley‘s book Aaliyah: More Than a Woman, experienced a lot of setbacks during production. As we mentioned earlier, Zendaya pulled out of the role after she was originally cast to play Aaliyah.

Zendaya Coleman Explains Exit From Aaliyah Movie

“Let me just explain something, the reason why I chose not to do the Aaliyah movie had nothing to do with the haters or people telling me that I couldn’t do it, I wasn’t talented enough, or I wasn’t black enough. The main reasons were the production value wasn’t there, there were complications with the music rights, and I just felt like it wasn’t being handled delicately considering the situation… Therefore, I felt not really morally okay with moving forward with the project,” Zendaya said at the time, defending rumors about her exit.

The “Rock The Boat” singer died in a plane crash in Aug. 2001 — Aaliyah was just 22 years old.
