During most reality series, my favorite player changes throughout the game and even when someone wins, there’s always some traits about them I’m skeptical of. However, ‘Big Brother’ 16 was a whole new ball park.
‘Big Brother’ Finale: Derrick Wins!
Big Brother is always full of lies, cheating, manipulation and backstabbing. Season 16 wasn’t any different. Of course, to play a good game and win, it’s natural that you’re going to have to do these things. However, Derrick changed the way this was done.
Sure, he befriended everyone in the house and then sent most of them home, creating the “puppet master” persona. But is this a bad thing? He was honest whenever he could be, without hurting his own game.
Cody Deserved Final 2
From the very beginning, he created The Hitmen alliance with Cody. That was the first alliance he made, and he stayed true to it — clearly — to the very end.
It was no surprise that he went the entire season without getting put on the block. In a season where four people are on the block each week, it’s super impressive that not only did he avoid the hot seat, but pretty much avoided any talk of being put up on the block.
He played the game by confiding in those he trusted but not fully confiding in anyone but Cody. Luckily, he had Cody who kept his mouth shut for the majority of the game and was an amazing player as well. I didn’t like that Frankie told Cody he was basically the talking head for Derrick, because Cody played an impressive game on his own, winning three HOHs, and three vetos.
Plus, as he said he was the reason that Caleb voted his BFF, Frankie, out of the house.
Derrick’s Social Game Trumped All
Unfortunately, in the position Cody was put in, he proved that his loyalty to Derrick was above his want to win the game — a characteristic we can definitely admire, one that is rare in the show. We all know that if he had taken Victoria, he would have won hands down.
Ultimately, Derrick not only was a key competitor — winning four HOHs, he was more importantly a more impressive social player, never being on the chopping block. And that speaks louder than anything else in the Big Brother house.
