‘Gotham’ Premiere: Ben McKenzie Talks Batman Prequel
Ben, formally of The O.C. and Southland, landed the coveted role of young Commissioner Jim Gordon, and we have to say, he’s the perfect pick. HollywoodLife.com chatted with Ben about the hot new series, and he teased a major decision that will leave Gordon dealing with serious consequences.
“He makes a decision in the pilot that will come back and bite him in the ass,” Ben told HollywoodLife.com. “Even though he made the right decision, the morally correct decision, it has negative ramifications for him going forward.”
Secrets and consequences fill the streets of Gotham in this Batman prequel.
“He’s got this fiancée [played by Erin Richards] who’s wonderful except she’s hiding secrets from him,” Ben continued. “He’s not going to be able to tell her what is going on with him in the job in order to protect her. I mean so many different things. Mooney [played by Jada Pinkett Smith] is vying with Falcone for control of the city. We’ll also introduce Don Maroni who is also vying for control. Everyone’s corrupt.”
‘Gotham’ Premiere: Ben McKenzie Teases Major Plot Focus Of Series
One of Gotham’s main premises is to chronicle the lives of the characters before Bruce Wayne dons the Batman suit. Ben previewed the plan for the series, which includes Gotham’s descent into darkness.
“I mean the larger, the meta story is Gordon’s ascendancy and Gotham’s descendancy,” Ben told HollywoodLife.com. Gordon’s ascendancy to commissioner and Gotham’s descendancy into utter chaos and anarchy basically. That’s like the seven year plan.”
