Emma Watson’s Gender Inequality Speech
Emma is ready to put an end to gender inequality. The Harry Potter star gave a powerful speech at the United Nations headquarters on Sept. 20 to encourage men and women to strive for equality among the sexes.
Before her speech, she was introduced United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. “She’s been using her magic wand in her movie,” Ban said. “I hope she will use [her] magic want to stop violence against women,” he said to Watson, drawing laughs and a lovely smile from the actress. “Again, thank you very much for shining your spotlight on this life-saving work.”
Then, Emma stepped up to the podium to make her speech.
“Today, we are launching a campaign called HeForShe,” she started off. “I am reaching out to you before we need your help. We want to end gender inequality and to do this, we need everyone involved. This is the first campaign of its kind at the UN. We want to try to galvanize as many men and boys as possible to be advocates for change and we don’t just want to talk about it. We want to try and make sure that it’s tangible.”
She discussed her journey to becoming a feminist. She said she was deemed “bossy” at 8-years-old because she wanted to direct plays that she put on for parents. She said she started to be “sexualized” at just 14 by the media.
“Women are choosing not to identify as feminists,” she continued. “Apparently, I am among the ranks of women whose expressions are seen as too strong, ‘too aggressive,’ isolating and anti-men, unattractive, even. Why has the word become such an uncomfortable one?”
Emma also called upon men to help make this change happen. “Men, I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation,” she said. “Gender equality is your issue too.”
Emma, we fully support your campaign. You are such an inspiration to everyone.
