‘Red Band Society’: Octavia Spencer Talks Her Favorite Scene In The Pilot
There were many, many moments in the series premiere of Red Band Society that had us shedding a few tears. The film follows a group of youngsters residing in a pediatric ward because of illnesses that include cancer, an eating disorder and a failing heart.
However, there’s a particular scene in the pilot episode that Octavia found absolutely “transforming.”
“Well, the scene that I love from what you just saw is where Leo goes to talk to Charlie in the coma,” Octavia said in a group interview. “It’s just one of the most grown-up. I don’t know; it was kind of transforming. I mean it didn’t matter what they were talking about, what he was saying to him, that it was about his illness. I think you could substitute your own life or your own circumstances into what he was saying. I thought it was just so beautifully done. Charlie Rowe [plays Leo] is a young Daniel Day-Lewis; he was just amazing.”
In the scene, Leo gives comatose Charlie a red band, symbolizing survival. “Luck isn’t getting what you want. It’s surviving what you don’t want,” Charlie had told Leo when they first met.
Octavia also gushed about Griffin Gluck, 14, who plays Charlie. “Every time you’re in a scene with Griffin, it just takes my breath away because he’s just so perfectly present, even though he doesn’t say a single, solitary word to us,” she said in the interview.

You can’t deny the superb talent of this young cast. They are a well-rounded, mature ensemble handling tough subject matter with ease and Octavia has witnessed that first-hand.
“They’re exquisitely talented,” she continued in the interview. “I think they’ve [the writers] done an amazing job putting the right people in every single, solitary role. So, you guys are witnessing, at least I feel like I’m getting a front row seat to greatness happening. You see some talent that are going to be around for a while.”
