Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has been in the hospital since Sept. 10, following the discovery of a tumor in his abdomen. On Sept. 17, doctors updated the public on the health challenges he’s facing. Dr. Zane Cohen spoke outside Mount Sinai Hospital and revealed some startling information.
The mass in Rob’s abdomen has been identified as a malignant tumor, identified as lypsarcoma. It’s a very rare and difficult tumor — it arises from soft tissue structures — but doctors are optimistic.
During further discussion with the mayor and his family, doctors suggested a treatment plan, which will consist of chemotherapy treatment. Rob will undergo in-hospital, in-patient treatment for three days before going home for 17 or 18 days. He will then return to the hospital and start a new cycle, then repeat.
Rob will receive his chemotherapy treatment at Mount Sinai Hospital.
The stage of his lypsarcoma, which embodies only 1% of all cancers, was not revealed.
Rob was initially admitted to Humber River Hospital, but was transferred to Mount Sinai on Sept. 11. Since then, the mayor’s family has been visiting the hospital, according to CBCNews.
“Our family’s strong, Rob’s strong and with all the support of the people, that’s what keeps us going,” his brother Coun. Doug Ford, who stepped in to fill Rob’s shoes in the mayoral race, said Sept. 16.
After the tumor was found, Rob dropped out of the mayoral race at the last minute, and Doug replaced him on the ballot.
While serving as mayor, Rob has faced several health issues. He has been in the hospital two other times this year. He was admitted for a reported toe injury, and when he went into rehab nearly a year after the start of a drug-related scandal involving crack cocaine.
We’re so sad to hear this terrible news. Our thoughts go out to Rob and his loves ones during this difficult time.
