In a lengthy interview with Hot 97, Donald Glover (also known by rapper name Childish Gambino) opened up about the comparisons to Drake, but wants to clarify one thing: unlike Drake, he ‘really grew up in the hood.’ (And this isn’t Donald’s first time throwing shade at Drake!) Watch the interview for more.
Donald Glover, 30, is more than aware of the comparisons people make between Drake, 27, and his rap alter ego, Childish Gambino. Indeed, it’s even made him lash out in the past, calling Drake out on stage. However, Donald doesn’t view the comparisons as necessarily favorable — in a new interview with Hot 97’s Peter Rosenberg, he outlines the differences between himself and Drake and makes one thing clear: wearing “grandma sweaters” doesn’t erase the fact that he’s black, nor does it erase his experiences growing up poor.
Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino’s Drake Diss: ‘I Grew Up In The Hood’ — Watch
“Drake doesn’t get asked, ‘Are you hard enough?’ or anything like that even though Drake’s life is really my life,” Donald tells Hot 97. “I really grew up in the hood.” Is he implying that Drake didn’t?
To be fair, we’re pretty sure that Drake does get asked that now and then, considering he grew up in a middle class suburb in Toronto and starred in Degrassi: The Next Generation beginning at the tender age of 15. However, with enough albums and credibility under his belt, it’s true that Drake’s rags-to-riches story, as Drizzy tells it, is not called into question as often anymore.
“I get it. I’m wearing a grandma sweater,” Childish continued. “But I am also a black male. I still have to wear this grandma sweater when I go see my grandma in the Bronx. Who lives in a shitty neighborhood. My cousin just got shot and stabbed twice hustling there.”
Childish’s upbringing comes up a lot in his music, as it does for a lot of his fellow rappers. In “Outside,” he raps:
“And my uncle on that stuff that got my grandma shook
Drug dealers roughed him up and stole his address book
He’s supposed to pay ‘em back
He owe ’em money but his bank account is zero
So my momma made us sleep with Phillips-heads under the pillow
Like that would do somethin’
But she’s got six kids, she’s gotta do somethin’
She don’t want me in a lifestyle like my cousin.”
The Community actor also takes the time to drop an incredible 4-minute freestyle — if you’re a Childish fan, you should definitely check out the full interview!
Childish Gambino Calls Himself Better Than Kendrick Lamar, Drake & Schoolboy Q
This isn’t the first time that Donald has called out Drake — at a July show in Sydney, Australia, he rapped the following verse: “I cut their head off, that’s every rapper living, that’s Kendrick, that’s Drake, that’s Schoolboy, that’s everyone! I don’t give a f*ck!”
Later, he rapped: “’This n***a think he Drake.’ Nah, I ain’t Drake. I sing better, I do better, my s**t’s wetter.”
