Meredith Vieira returns to daytime with the premiere of her new talk show ‘The Meredith Vieira Show’ on Monday, September 8, but in a shocking new interview, the host reveals that she’s already prepared to leave, if ratings flop! Can Meredith break the daytime curse with her syndicated series?
Meredith Vieira is returning to daytime television. The daytime talk show arena is tough (Katie Couric, anyone?) so what inspired Meredith to launch her own show, at this time? Read on to find out, plus see her shocking revelation — she’s already talking about leaving her own show!
Meredith Vieira: Why I Returned To Daytime TV
Meredith has been a staple on American television for decades. The beloved journalist became the youngest correspondent ever on 60 Minutes at the age of 35, and since, gained household notoriety for her work on the Today show, The View, plus hosting Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.
Now, Meredith is taking quite possibly the toughest move in her career — hosting her very own daytime talk show.
The Meredith Vieira Show premieres Sept. 8, and although she’s nervous — “I’m a perfectionist,” she said — Meredith reveals why she took the gig.
“What I like most about doing this is connecting to people,” Meredith told TV Guide Magazine‘s Stephen Battaglio. “That’s what I missed most about the job, and that’s why I wanted to come back and try it again.”
Meredith, whose first guest on the premiere episode is Jennifer Lopez, is trying out different elements that are not the norm for daytime talk.
The set in the 30 Rock studio is designed after her own cozy home. Plush chairs and copies of paintings made by her kids hang on the wall for a family room vibe. Yes, Kris Jenner also took a stab at the home design idea in her short-lived Kris, but Meredith’s look is a bit more relatable, void of the double spiral staircase, extravagant chandelier and black and white checkered flooring.
She’s also enlisted a band for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up. “I’ve always thought it’d be so cool to have a band in my home. Particularly when I had a bad day — how great would that be?”
‘The Meredith Vieira Show’ Premieres: Meredith Already Prepared To Leave, If Ratings Flop
“I have a clause that allows me to get out at the end of the year if I don’t want to do it anymore or if it’s going in a direction,” Meredith tells the magazine. “Everything is great until the numbers come in and then it’s, ‘Oh, we need you to do this,'” the host admits, proving that she fully intends to stay true to herself.
“That’s why that clause is there. If we did go down a path that wasn’t me, I could leave and everybody would understand,” she says. “But I’ve got to say, the executives — the suits — have been fabulous and very supportive.”
We’re glad to hear that Meredith is enjoying her time on her brand new set so far, and we hope that she succeeds! We are rooting for you, Meredith!
