The female comedienne died on Sept. 4 in a New York hospital after going into cardiac arrest during a routine throat surgery on Aug. 28. Joan Rivers’ Death — Pioneering Comedienne’s Life In Photos
There’s no question about it, Hollywood will always love Joan Rivers. She enjoyed an illustrious 40 year career in comedy, including stand-up and co-hosting the hit fashion show, Fashion Police.
The petite star first rose to fame in 1965 when she guest-starred on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. The show allowed her to show off her comedic style. She became the permanent guest host for the show in 1983. She first appeared on the iconic Ed Sullivan Show in 1966 and wrote sketches for the show as well.
Her first late night talk show, The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers, launched in 1986 and ran until 1988.
The Joan Rivers Show first aired in 1989. She won a Daytime Emmy for the show in 1990 for Outstanding Talk Show Host. She was nominated again for Daytime Emmys in 1991 and 1992.
Joan and her daughter Melissa Rivers, 46, premiered their show Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best? in 2011. The show followed the lives of the mother-daughter duo in their careers and family. Joan also began co-hosting Fashion Police in 2010, alongside Giuliana Rancic, 40, Kelly Osbourne, 29, and George Kotsiopoulos, 45.
She wrote a number of books over the years, including I Hate Everyone…Starting with Me, Don’t Count the Candles: Just Keep the Fire Lit and Diary of a Mad Diva.
The comedienne was also unashamed of the plastic surgery she had gotten over the years. She always embraced her personal beauty.
Joan was married two times, to James Sanger in 1955, and Edgar Rosenberg from 1965 until he committed suicide in 1987. Joan had one child from her marriage to Edgar, daughter Melissa Warburg Rosenberg. Joan had one grandchild, Edgar Cooper Endicott.
Joan Rivers Passes Away At 81
Joan’s daughter Melissa released a statement following her mother’s death. Joan had been hospitalized since Aug. 28. Celebs continually sent their prayers and well wishes to the star while she was in the hospital.
