Steven Sotloff, the second American journalist to be beheaded by the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), in less than two weeks, was murdered and filmed by his executioners. But a new report claims there are several clues in the video that will lead to the capture of those responsible.
Steven Sotloff, 31, was beheaded in a grutesque video that was uploaded to YouTube by ISIS, with the title “A Second Message To America.” Although his video looks almost identical to the beheading of American journalist, James Foley, 40, experts say there are several clues that will not only identify who killed these men but where it was done.
Steven Sotloff — How His Executioner Will Be Found
There are several things that stand out to the trained eye, according to journalist, Eliot Higgins, who spoke with The Daily Mail.
The first clue as to when this happened, is Steven’s facial hair, it is visibly longer than what was seen in the video of him at the end of James’ video, two weeks ago.
There are also mentions of Mosul Dam and Amerli, which is a reference to the US bombings of ISIS camps in recent days. These two clues alone rule out that Steven was killed at the same time as James or even months ago.
Now in James’ video, there is what looks to be a “green plain in the distance,” according to the report. This led experts to locate exactly where James was murdered, in Raqqa, which is ISIS’ capital in north-west Syria.
Unfortunately, you can’t see anything but plains in the background of Steven’s execution video, but an expert tells The Daily Mail that it looks like it took place in Raqqa as well.
The same knife appears to have been used to kill both men and the report claims that the executioner is still the same, despite his attempts to mask his voice. He has been coined “Jihadi John,” due to his British accent.
Steven: Who He Was & His Mother’s Plea
Steven was kidnapped in 2013 and at the time he was a freelancer for many outlets, including Time and Foreign Policy.
Just one week ago, Steven’s mother, Shirley Sotloff, made a video for ISIS, where she is begging them not to kill her son.
“Steven is a journalist who traveled to the Middle East to cover the suffering of Muslims at the hands of tyrants. Steven is a loyal and generous son, brother and grandson,” she said. “He is an honorable man and has always tried to help the weak.”
HollywoodLifers, we feel horrible for James’ family and friends.
