So sad. Steven Sotloff, an American journalist, has allegedly been beheaded in an execution by militant group Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS). This is the second execution of an American journalist by the hands of ISIS in less than two weeks.
The militant Islamic State group has released a second video, titled “A second message to America,” in which it claims to have beheaded the captured American journalist Steven Sotloff, 31.
Steven Sotloff Beheaded By ISIS In Terrifying Video: American Journalist Executed
Before he is killed, Steven speaks to the camera and says he is “paying the price” for U.S. intervention. It’s not clear whether he was reading from a script or not.
Furthermore, the masked killer speaks to President Barack Obama. He says, “Just as your missiles continue to strike our people, our knife will continue to strike the necks of your people.”
Steven was kidnapped in 2013 while reporting on the civil war in Syria, according to the Huffington Post. He was a freelancer for various outlets, including Time magazine and Foreign Policy.
Shortly before his death, friends told The New York Times that Steven was a “selfless,” “loyal” and “caring” person.
Steven Sotloff’s Mother Pleaded For Her Son’s Safe Return
Last week, his mother, Shirley Sotloff, released a video pleading with the ISIS not to kill her son.
“Steven is a journalist who traveled to the Middle East to cover the suffering of Muslims at the hands of tyrants. Steven is a loyal and generous son, brother and grandson,” she said. “He is an honorable man and has always tried to help the weak.”
This new video comes nearly two weeks after ISIS released footage in which they beheaded another American journalist, James Foley. In that video, ISIS threatened to murder Steven next if the US bombing continued in Iraq.
ISIS is believed to be holding several more journalists in captivity.
The Obama administration is working to confirm the authenticity of the video, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said earlier today. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Sotloff and Mr. Sotloff’s family,” he added.
HollywoodLifers, this is so sad and our thoughts are with Steven’s family during this difficult time.
