It’s so hard to believe that it’s already been five years since Michael Jackson‘s tragic death in June 2009 following a cardiac arrest. He would have turned 56 years old on August 29, and his legend still lives on. Relive his legacy and share your favorite moments below.
Michael Jackson’s Birthday: Remembering The Music Icon On His 56th Birthday
Michael’s later years were clouded by various scandals, but there’s no denying his impact on the music industry. When he came onto the scene at just five years old as a member of The Jackson 5, it was obvious that he had something special.
After years of performing alongside his brothers, his first solo album, Got To Be There, performed fairly well when it was released in 1972, but it was Thriller, released in 1982, which would launch him into the stratosphere. A massive critical and commercial success, Thriller has hit Platinum an incredible 29 times in the United States!
From then on, Michael would produce hit record after hit record, despite the personal and legal troubles which began to grab the spotlight in the early 1990s, after he was accused of multiple counts of child abuse.
Michael is survived by his three children Michael Jr., 17, Paris, 16, and Prince Michael, 12, who are being raised by their grandmother, Katherine Jackson, 84. Luckily, Michael’s children seem to have been able to — for the most part — avoid the spotlight which was always trained on him. The children appear to be living relatively normal lives despite their unusual upbringing — something that Michael always strove to do for them so that they could have childhoods where he could not.
