Hilary Duff is no longer So Yesterday. She’s back at it with a brand new single and is about to release her fifth album! HollywoodLife.com spoke to her exclusively about the inspiration behind the album, how being a wife and mother shaped her, and of course, about how Lizzie McGuire would feel about her new sound.

Now, this is what dreams are made of! Hilary Duff has returned to the music world with her new single, “Chasing the Sun,” and is set to release her fifth album in the fall! The 26-year-old mother of one chatted with HollywoodLife.com exclusively and admitted that a lot has changed over the years, but she’s finally ready to get back to what she loves.

Hilary Duff Interview: From Lizzie McGuire To ‘Chasing The Sun’

Hilary’s last album, Dignity came out in 2007, and a lot has changed since then. So, why did it take the actress six years to get back into the studio?

“I guess I felt like my I had done everything I wanted to do, and I really missed that part of my life,” Hilary told us exclusively. “I missed being on stage and interacting with my fans the way that I used to. I was ready to share some of my experiences. I missed recording, I missed the whole creative process of making a record. I felt like I had been home with my son and really learned how to be a great mom and I felt so connected to him that I felt like I could branch out a little bit and do things that make me happy now, and challenge myself again.”

Over the past six years, Hilary has been focused on living a normal life and becoming a mother! She gave birth to her son, Luca, in March 2012 with husband Mike Comrie. They have since separated but are still close and co-parent their son! So, he’s been hanging with Luca while Hilary goes back and forth to the studio!

However, Hilary admitted that of course, she has a few fears about coming back into the music world.

“You know, I want people to relate to me and like my music and understand what I have to say,” she said. “It’s scary to get back into the studio and I guess find my voice again. But it’s also exciting because I have so much more confidence this time around because I feel so much more confident as a person. After taking such a big break and taking time to live my life, and go and find out who I am and what I’m into, and what kind of mother I am, what kind of wife I am.”

Hilary Duff: Lizzie McGuire Helped Girls Through ‘Feeling Awkward’

While Hilary is moving forward and putting out a whole new sound, she’s not forgetting how it all started — with a little something called Lizzie McGuire. The fans from the show have been “really loyal,” she told us.

“I think that honestly Lizzie McGuire had a really big part in that [loyalty], because I feel like it meant so much to girls in that crucial time in their life where they’re changing and feeling awkward,” she said. “I think it has a little special place in their hearts. And obviously, they followed me through my music career and some of my movies, and they’re ready to see what I’m doing next! But I think I have a little different fan base as well because I’m a young mom and I see a lot of stuff from young moms that are following me and supporting me. It’s awesome! I think they’re all still there and I’m excited to really show them who I am now.”

So of course, we wrapped the interview with the most important of all — what exactly would our friend, Lizzie, think about Hilary’s new music?

“Oh my god. I think she’d love it! That’s so funny to me, I don’t know what she’s doing right around now,” she said.

Well, we can think that the cartoon version of herself is looking at Hilary, very proud. Watch Hilary’s new music video for “Chasing the Sun” here!
