The fifth time is a charm for Jeff Gordon! On July 27, Jeff won his fifth Brickyard 400 race, during the very same weekend that Indianapolis Motor Speedway celebrated his first Brickyard 400 win 20 years ago!
Jeff Gordon, 34, just got a pretty amazing early birthday present! The pro racing driver won his fifth Brickyard 400 race on July 27, eight days before his 35th birthday. Coincidentally, Jeff’s fifth career win at Indy just so happened to fall on Jeff Gordon Day!
Jeff Gordon Wins In Indianapolis: His Fifth Record Victory At Brickyard 400
On a Lap 144 restart, Jeff passed his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kasey Kahne to set a record with his fifth win.
Additionally, Jeff’s latest win helped him tie Formula One racer Michael Schumacher for the most wins on the historic race track.
As Jeff made his final laps around the track, he heard the crowd wildly cheering him on.
“I was trying so hard with 10 [laps] to go not to focus on the crowd,” Jeff says in a new interview. “Every once in a while I’d glance up there and see the reactions and I’d try not to let it get to me. And yet you can’t help it. It’s such a big place and such an important victory and a crucial moment in the season and the championship and those emotions take over.”
Jeff’s two young children, Leo and Ella, were also on hand to root for him, making his win all the more special.
“I have my kids here; there’s nothing better, especially at one of the biggest races, to have your family here. All I know is my friends back at home; I need to take a vacation more often,” he says, laughing. “This one is for all those fans throughout the years and all weekend long. They’re saying we believe you can get number 5. We got number 5…..yes!”
Jeff Gordon’s Winning Streak
This is Jeff’s 90th career win, which coincidentally occurred during the same weekend that Indianapolis Motor Speedway honored the racing star’s first Brickyard 400 win in 1994. Jeff also won the Brickyard 400 in 1998, 2001 and 2004.
Jeff’s July 27 victory marks his second win of 2014.
