In supremely exciting news for nerds everywhere, True Blood standout Deborah Ann Woll has been cast in a leading role for Marvel’s upcoming Daredevil series, set to air as a 13-episode run on Netflix sometime in 2015. Read on for more details and let us know if you think she was well cast for the role!
Deborah Ann Woll In ‘Daredevil’, Netflix’s Marvel Joint: Cast As Karen Page
While neither Netflix nor Marvel have any comment on the casting, the news has been confirmed via sources to several outlets, such as Entertainment Weekly and The Hollywood Reporter, so this isn’t going to be a Tina–Fey-will-produce-Hocus–Pocus–2 scenario — this is happening.
Deborah will play Karen Page, the longest-running love interest to our hero Matt Murdock/Daredevil. Karen appeared in the very first Daredevil issue, so it seems like this series may be far removed from the 2003 film adaptation starring Ben Affleck, released by 20th Century Fox — not Marvel Studios.
In the film, Elektra Natchios (Jennifer Garner) played Matt Murdock’s main love interest, while Karen, played by Ellen Pompeo, served a very minor role. While certainly profitable, the film was fairly panned by critics and diehard comic book fans alike; it would make sense for Marvel to remove themselves from that and to go back to basics and erase the film from the canon.
Karen is a secretary at the law firm of Nelson & Murdock, and in the comics, her relationship with Matt derails once he reveals to her his secret identity as the vigilante Daredevil.
Marvel Studios Primed For World Domination?
The Daredevil series is part of a massive deal between Netflix and Marvel; along with the Daredevil miniseries, Netflix has also picked up Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and The Defenders.
Marvel Studios’ next venture is Guardians Of The Galaxy, out in theaters on August 1. Meanwhile, ABC’s Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. is entering its second season this fall, and ABC has just picked up Captain America spin-off Agent Carter, which is set to premiere mid-season in 2015.
It’s Marvel’s world, and we’re just living in it. And loving it.
So, HollywoodLifers, are you looking forward to seeing Deborah play Karen Page? Do you love her as Jessica Hamby on True Blood? Let us know your thoughts on all things Daredevil below!
