The July 14 ’24: Live Another Day’ finale wasn’t easy on our nerves. A beloved character died and Jack battled Cheng Zhi one last time.
24: Live Another Day has been an exhilarating and intense ride from beginning to end. It was so good to have Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) back for this 12-episode season and the show proved over and over again why it’s such a classic. On the July 14 finale, Jack took on Cheng Zhi (Tzi Ma) , Jack sacrificed himself for someone he loves and we had to say goodbye to one of our favorite characters.
’24: Live Another Day’ Finale Recap: Close Calls
Audrey (Kim Raver) was still firmly planted on the park bench after Cheng’s sniper had taken out her Secret Service agents and her Chinese Embassy contact. Sadly, the contact was still alive and crying out to Audrey for help. As soon as Audrey tried to help, Cheng called her. She promised she wouldn’t run. Cheng shot the girl dead instantly.
“You move from the bench again and my sniper will kill you,” Cheng spat. Audrey didn’t move.
Jack, Mark (Tate Donovan) and Kate (Yvonne Strahovski) trying to find out what Stolnavich’s connection was to Cheng. Jack being Jack, he easily uncovered a hidden cell phone with major details. The information prompted them to a shipment dock where Cheng would be.
Pretty much immediately after, Cheng called Jack and said to back off or Audrey would die. Jack was debating whether or not to go after Audrey or stick with Cheng. “She loves you!” Mark said. “Shut up!” Jack replied. The idea of Audrey dying was almost too much for Jack to take. Kate was baffled that Jack was going to go after Audrey even with a direct order from President Heller (William Devane) to go after Cheng. Jack agreed and he wanted her to take out the sniper, saving Audrey.
Heller was still dealing with the threat of war from the Chinese and he still didn’t know about Audrey. Heller wanted the Chinese President to halt the naval advances as a gesture of good faith, but the Chinese President wasn’t buying the claim that Cheng was alive. If China attacked, Heller was ready to fight. (GO USA!)
Meanwhile, Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub) was walking down a dark and winding road after her close call with death. A nice couple thought she needed help and she used their phone to call Jack. Jack was wary to trust her again after her Adrian Cross betrayal. “Please let me make this right,” Chloe said. Jack couldn’t deny his best friend that and he agreed to let her help.
’24: Live Another Day’ Finale Recap: Holding On & Letting Go
Jack picked Chloe up and they didn’t have any time to lose. He asked her about Adrian and why she was helping him. She said he used her knowledge to create the override device. She told Jack that he was the only one who could take Cheng down, but he needed her help. The operation was simple for them. Capture Cheng alive. Jack revealed Audrey’s predicament and Chloe apologized for sort of putting her in that position. “It’s not your fault, Chloe,” he said. “You need to let that go.”
The sniper still had his eye (and rifle) on Audrey. However, Kate was close by. Kate called Audrey and told her to remain calm as she explained the plan. Cheng didn’t really want Audrey dead, so she needed to draw the attention of the sniper so Kate could get a location. Audrey obeyed and the sniper shot close behind her. Cheng relayed the grim message to take Audrey out if the sniper saw anything unusual.
She made another call to Audrey and said she was about to move in. (I have a bad feeling about this.)
Over at the dock, Jack was taking the big guns in to take out Cheng. Chloe was helping Jack and his partner get past Cheng’s men. They were taking them out like flies. But soon, Cheng knew Jack was closing in and ordered the sniper to take out Audrey. Chloe warned Kate to get Audrey to safety quickly.
The sniper started shooting, but Kate stepped in to save her. She was secured and Kate was taking her back to safety. Chloe relayed the good news to Jack before Cheng cut out their communication.
However, Audrey wasn’t out of the woods yet. As Kate was escorting her out of the park, another sniper let loose and started shooting. While all seemed fine, Audrey revealed she’d been shot. Kate tried to save her, but it was too late. Audrey shed a single tear and closed her eyes to die. (Our hearts are broken.)
Then, the silent clock we know all too well.
’24: Live Another Day’ Finale Recap: For Audrey
Kate called Jack to break the devastating news. “I’m so sorry,” she cried. “We lost Audrey.” Jack was stunned because she was just confirmed safe. But it was true.
Jack had no words. He just sat their silently for a few moments and let his grief take him. His lip was quivering and he nearly shared some tears. Then came the rage. He was going after Cheng and taking out everyone in his wake. One of his most shining moments was him killing a guy by throwing a knife like a tomahawk. (A tomahawk!)
Jack found Cheng and a fight ensued. Meanwhile, the Chinese had breached the perimeter and the U.S. was thisclose to a new world war. Jack phoned in to Heller and revealed he had Cheng alive. He threatened Cheng with a sword if he didn’t say his name. “My name is Cheng Zhi!” he seethed. After President Heller & Co. confirmed Cheng’s identity, Jack shut off communication.
“This is for Audrey you son of a b**ch,” Jack said to Cheng as he chopped his head off. (Yes. He did that.)
Thankfully, Heller had the Chinese President back off from an attack. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief as they avoided a world war. But Heller was in for one rude awakening.
His aide told him that Audrey was dead. Heller collapsed upon hearing the news about Audrey. He was overcome with grief.
When Jack went to find Chloe after killing Cheng, she was gone. But there was blood left behind. Someone called him about Chloe and Jack said to set it up and he’d be there.
12 hours later go by and Kate is leaving the force. Erik tried to explain that Audrey’s death wasn’t her fault. After her husband and now Audrey, she was done. Mark was being held for treason and being sent back to the States. He wasn’t taking Audrey’s death too well either.
Audrey’s body was being taken back home to be properly laid to rest. Heller discussed his future with the Prime Minister and it was devastating to say the least.
Heller was going to let the memories leave him as his Alzheimer’s took over. “I won’t remember that I had a daughter that died in such a horrible fashion,” he stated. It may seem bleak to some, but Heller was all alone now and couldn’t handle knowing Audrey had died so innocently. (What a scene by William Devane. Bravo.)
Jack came to retrieve Chloe from the Russians. Chloe couldn’t believe he was sacrificing himself for her. They held hands for a brief moment and he smiled at her as he walked away. He swore to the Russians that he would destroy them if anything happened to Chloe or his family. He got one last look at Chloe as he stepped into the helicopter.
And that’s the last time we see Jack Bauer. Sacrificing himself and doing whatever it takes to save the people he loves.
The silent clock followed soon after, but Jack’s story isn’t over. It never will be.
