The times, they are a changin’ at Downton Abbey! In an ominous, just-released trailer, the estate’s infamously old-fashioned butler, Mr. Carson, promises that Season 5 of the acclaimed Masterpiece series will be anything but ordinary.
On the past four seasons of Downton Abbey, the members of the aristocratic Crawley family have watched the world they know slip slowly away. Some have embraced the emerging, modern England — Lady Sybil (Jessica Brown Findlay) married the family chauffeur, Tom Branson (Allen Leech); Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) launched a successful writing career — while others, such as Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) and Mr. Carson (Jim Carter), remain firmly rooted in the past. But based on the brand-new Season 5 teaser video ITV released on June 24, it looks like these old-order gentleman will finally be forced to face the future!
‘Downton Abbey’ Trailer For Season 5 — Watch The New Teaser
Despite the rapidly changing world around them, the staff at Downton Abbey, led by the ever-loyal Mr. Carson, have always struggled to keep things running like clockwork. The images shown in this new teaser trailer — the perfect place setting, the grand abbey’s flawlessly manicured grounds — reflect the old aristocratic way of having everything just so.
But the freshly cut bouquet of roses losing a petal as an unseen Mr. Carson warns, “I feel a shaking of the ground I stand on,” tells us that the financially challenged Crawleys might not be able to keep up appearances for much longer.
“The nature of life is not permanence, but flux,” Mr. Carson bemoans. “Things are changing.”
Season 5 of Downton Abbey will wrap filming in August of 2014 and premiere in 2014. We can’t wait!
