Following the death of Allison Argent in Season 3B of ‘Teen Wolf’, her father, Chris Argent, will be dragged back into the fold after some new supernatural villains have arrived in Beacon Hills to terrorize the McCall pack. Read on for more details from Season 4 in our EXCLUSIVE interview with JR Bourne!
The tagline for Season 4 of Teen Wolf is “Can’t Go Back,” and while that will be a blessing and a necessary coping mechanism for our core cast after the death of Allison Argent (Crystal Reed) and the nogitsune’s possession of Stiles Stilinski (Dylan O’Brien), others may not have the option. Chris Argent (JR Bourne) will be forced to carry Allison’s death around with him everywhere, and it will influence every one of his actions in Season 4. For more on what to expect from Chris’ role in Season 4, read on for our exclusive interview with JR! And we didn’t just cover the heavy issues — we also covered the really important ones, like chest hair, deep v-necks, shipping, and grief beards.
‘Teen Wolf’: JR Bourne Interview — The Loss Of Allison, Chris’ Relationship With Kate
HollywoodLife.com: What can you tell me about Chris’ role this season, other than growing a really excellent grief beard?
JR Bourne: It’s so true, right? The easiest way to show grief is to grow a beard! I’ve had a lot of fun growing it, too. Well, he definitely has taken off and I think he has struggled with coming back. Ultimately, it’s going to be Scott asking him to return … and knowing that Kate has returned and is not coming back to go flower shopping; she’s coming back with an agenda. So, he comes back, and with the final code that his daughter came up with: “We protect those who can’t protect themselves.” That last little bit sitting inside of him makes him realize that he has to come back.
HL: Now that Allison is gone — rest in peace — is Scott Chris’ entry to the pack? Maybe Derek? How is Chris going to interact with the main cast?
JRB: He is going to come back and again, help those who can’t protect themselves. And that happens because of the Dead Pool and this new addition, The Benefactor, and everybody is a target. So, he comes back to basically try and deal with that. He is coming back with a tremendous amount of vengeance and anger. I think he realizes that has to be directed somewhere. So, at this point, I feel like he feels he’s protected these people but I think he might also be struggling with that these are the people who played the biggest part in the action and destruction of his family – he is going to struggle with that.
HL: Speaking of his family, is there anything you can tease about Kate and Chris’ relationship? Is there any kind of sibling bond to go back to?
JRB: I think that, in his blind rage, it isn’t going to be warm and fuzzy. It’s not going to be a good family reunion. Again, looking at the bigger picture … He always seems to have this struggle, the fight between these two worlds. It started off as the fight between being a hunter and a follower of the code, and the balance of being a parent and the love he has for his daughter and his wife – all of that is gone. And now he comes back with this balance of so much anger and vengeance inside of him – does he help these people? Does he protect these people? Does he just seek revenge and just go after the entire lot of them? It’s quite a struggle for him.
HL: Since Chris is obviously still holding on to the death of Allison, and still holding onto that vengeance and her new code, does Chris carry any keepsake of Allison’s? Is Allison’s presence deeply felt throughout the season?
JRB: I think so! It’s hard not to have it; it’s hard not to feel it. There are definitely moments throughout the season where you are going to see people reflect upon it and be reminded of it. As for Argent, specifically, it’s still too fresh and still too new. There isn’t a specific keepsake he has. I think other than what’s going to be inside of his broken heart, and what is that going to make him do? I feel that’s the deepest thing to deal with that – to let go, how does he fight closure with that? It’s going to be a tough one for him.
‘Teen Wolf’: JR Bourne Interview — Who Is The Benefactor?
HL: Is there anything you can tease about The Benefactor? Not going to lie — someone who wants to kill all of the supernatural creatures sounds a lot like Gerard Argent.
JRB: There’s going to be a lot of people who you wonder who it might be. He’s definitely at the top of the list! But, when you think about it, [there are a lot of people] that would have a potential reason and a potential satisfaction that would come out of [killing all the supernatural creatures]. There is going to be a real ‘who is it?’ Yeah, it’s a great mystery that [Jeff Davis] created for this season.
HL: Will it be a mystery like the Kanima was in Season 2? At the time, we knew that was somebody we already knew. Is The Benefactor storyline going to be similar to that? Or will The Benefactor be a brand new person we haven’t met?
JRB: I think that you and everyone are going to weigh on who they think it is. I think at times it’s going to seem obvious and I think at other times its going to seem, because of the way seasons have gone, more of a shock. It’s going to be clear as the season goes — who wants and who has the biggest desire and the most to gain from getting retribution, getting some sort of sense of satisfaction out of this.
HL: Well, now I think it’s YOU!
JRB: Well, you’re going to have to wait! [Laughs]
‘Teen Wolf’: JR Bourne Interview — Will Derek Be Interacting With Chris Or With Kate?
HL: People are really interested in seeing Chris and Derek interacting some more, especially since their scenes were some of the most interesting moments in Season 3, such as when Derek was possessed and threatening to light Chris on fire. Will you two be interacting more this season?
JRB: You know, we love that as well. As actors, we were really excited about that. This season has so much going on. I think we would have had liked to have more but I think that there are enough things that are coming up for Derek and this season. Some amazing stuff! And then Argent being in the world that he is in, you might not see as much as the fans may have liked to see, unfortunately. But it’s such great stuff, individually, that they are going through.
HL: Is there going to be a lot of interaction between Derek and Kate? Are we going to get to the bottom of those issues?
JRB: Let’s hope, because there are a lot of things that a) I don’t want to say, and b) I think it’s more fun for you guys to let it unravel the way it’s supposed to unravel. But that is definitely one that makes the most sense. There’s a lot of history that we are slowly going to get into, I think.
‘Teen Wolf’: JR Bourne Interview — The Important Issues, Such As Chest Hair, Shipping, And V-Neck T-Shirts
HL: I think it was Wolfs Bane [Aug. 30-Sept. 1 in London] when you learned what shipping was? Now that you’re up to date with shipping, which is your favorite ship for Season 4?
JRB: I think it’s about time that we see Stiles find love. So, my immediate feeling would be for him to be shipped with someone where he can be loved and find love because he is such a great character and he deserves it. That’s something that he’s kind of had and he gets from Scott, as a best friend, but he deserves more than that – he deserves to feel the love we all look for in life. So, I would say, since Malia is who he is really close with – I think that is a nice one!
HL: I saw you got a kick out of a fan asking you [at Alpha Con in Vienna, Austria] about Derek’s chest hair for this season. So, Tyler is allowed to grow that out?
JRB: We joked that he was finally growing up and becoming a man with his chest hair coming in. [Tyler’s] answer was hilarious, I can’t remember exactly what he said but I think it was something along those lines. Yes, I got a good chuckle out of that. … He doesn’t have the time to shave.
HL: I just love the fact that he has hair now and didn’t before, so, just picturing these scenes of Derek being endlessly traumatized but taking the time to shave his chest…
JRB: I love when Jeff cast [Max Lloyd-Jones], who plays me in the flashback, [“The Fox And The Wolf”], because I think he might have been the first 18-year-old boy on our cast, and he had hair on his chest. We were like ‘good casting!’, because clearly I have hair on my chest, and I love that … we didn’t have him shave. [Laughs]
HL: On that note, who wears the deeper v-necks? Chris or Peter?
JRB: [Laughs] It might have used to be me, but Peter is definitely pulling out the deeper vees than me this season. But it doesn’t matter because I’m still taller!
HL: In that case, your vees might be deeper, but you just can’t tell because your torso is longer! V-neck science!
And that’s a wrap! So, HollywoodLifers, what do you think about Chris’ role in Season 4? Will you be grieving for Allison as much as Chris will be? Will you be growing out a grief beard of your very own? Who is The Benefactor? Will it be someone we know or someone entirely new? Are you looking forward to Chris’ interactions with Kate? Tell me all of your thoughts!
