Rik Mayall Dead At 56
“We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Rik Mayall who passed away this morning,” his management company Brunskill told BBC. “We will be issuing a further statement in the fullness of time.”
While his death is not said to be suspicious, in 1998 he was in a horrible quad bike accident, and had two haematomas and a fractured skull. He was in a coma for five days, then brought back to consciousness. Doctors had warned his family of possible brain damage and that his injuries were life threatening, so after he woke, he joked that he “rose from the dead.”
Rik was known for his comedy. He co-wrote and starred in both Bottom and The Young Ones and of course starred in The Comic Strip Presents, which aired in 1982 and ran for thirty years. Rik was definitely a huge star in the british comedy world. In 1997, he won a Primetime Emmy Award Outstanding Voice-Over Performance. He was rumored to have been working on a Dutch film in Portugal at the time of his death.
The Drop Dead Fred star is survived by his wife Barbara Robbin, and their three children: Rosie, 26; Sidney, 24; and Bonnie, 18. Our thoughts go out to all of his friends and family.
