California Chrome Owner Steve Coburn Disses Belmont Stakes Winner
Steve Coburn wasn’t going to let Tonalist walk away with the 2014 Belmont Stakes win lightly. After his horse, California Chrome, lost the 146th Belmont Stakes and was denied a Triple Crown victory by Tonalist, Steve Coburn wanted to voice his opinions.
When asked about Chrome, Steve said, “He didn’t have it in him apparently.” However, he didn’t stop there. Steve complained that this is California Chrome’s third race, while Tonalist had not competed in either the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness Stakes.
Steve said it wasn’t fair that these horses have been running in multiple races, and horses like Tonalist can just come out of nowhere for the Belmont Stakes.
“I will never see another Triple Crown winner because of the way they do this,” Steve said regarding the rules.
California Chrome Loses Belmont Stakes
California Chrome was out to take the Triple Crown title after winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. If he had won the Belmont Stakes, California Chrome would have been the first horse in 36 years to take the title.
