It’s been a whirlwind month for California Chrome and its owners, Perry Martin and Steve Coburn. At the Kentucky Derby in May, the thoroughbred proved why it was the odds-on favorite by blowing away the competition and winning the race by 13/4 lengths. The statement had been made — this horse could go all the way and win the Triple Crown.
The Preakness two weeks later was a little less conclusive. Though the horse stayed close to the front of the pack throughout the race, it took California Chrome much longer to assert itself. After holding off late challenges by Social Inclusion and Ride on Curlin, Chrome took the victory by just over one length. “He’s the real deal,” Social Inclusion’s trainer, Ron Sanchez, said. “My horse came to challenge him, but he found another engine.”
Now it’s time for the biggest race of Chrome’s life. With one more victorious race, he’ll be propelled into a historic group that includes horses like Secretariat and Seattle Slew, and will end what has been an amazingly long drought.
You know you wanna watch. The race starts at 6:35 p.m. ET, so fire up the live stream and witness history.
