The sexy songstress sparkled in an entirely mesh gown, (custom-made by Adam Selman), that was adorned with over 230,000 Swarovski crystals as she left little to the imagination — and even her stylist, Mel Ottenberg, admits RiRi even managed to leave him totally shocked!
Rihanna arrived to accept her ‘Fashion Icon’ award at the 2014 CFDA Awards in NYC at Lincoln Center on June 2 in an entirely translucent gown. Her backless mesh ensemble definitely stole the spotlight, as it showed off every inch of the 26-year-old singer’s figure — and it turns out RiRi wanted to rock a scandalous look for the formal affair!
Rihanna’s Sheer Dress — CFDA Awards Style:
Rihanna worked with talented designer Adam Selman on the custom-made creation. “We definitely wanted to make it a little bit scandalous,” he told Style.com. “The dress is just fishnet and crystals and a couple of fingers crossed. But fashion is about beauty, and the [female] body is part of that.”
Rihanna and Adam dreamed up the gown in April 2014, while the songstress was gearing up for the MTV Movie Awards. “We started talking about it, and I sketched it shortly after,” the designer said, admitting that the process was a total collaboration.
Not only was RiRi so hands-on with the process, but she actually requested the matching head scarf! “It brings such a Rihanna feel to the whole thing,” Adam said. “It seals the deal.”
Seeing RiRi and Adam collaborate is nothing new. Not only is Adam dating RiRi’s stylist, Mel Ottenberg, but Rihanna also tapped the designer to co-create her River Island collection — and he has made a slew of sexy looks for the songstress in the past! “We wanted to do an American designer, and he was just the right choice,” Rihanna’s stylist, Mel Ottenberg, explained to Style.com. “He’s worked so closely with us, and so hard for us. He’s turned it out for her so many times, and we were excited to do this with him.”
Rihanna’s Stylist Even Shocked By Her CFDA Awards Dress:
And even Mel, (who has seen it all on RiRi!), agreed that her CFDA dress definitely pushed the envelope. “It’s so naked,” the stylist told Style.com. “I don’t know if it’s shocking—I’m with her all the time, so my shock gauge is off, but I told her that I thought she was ready for this dress a while ago, and that I wasn’t. I’m the prude, and I’m just catching up.”
While few could leave the house in an entirely sheer gown, RiRi has the killer confidence needed to totally rock it in this ensemble — and she did just that! Do you agree? What do you think of her barely there ensemble?
