What a way to kick the night off! It may have taken longer than expected, but when Mariah finally showed up to open the World Music Awards on May 27, she did it with a bang by performing her new song “Meteorite.”
After taking three years off, the World Music Awards burst back onto the global stage with the one and only Mariah Carey. The legendary singer took the stage to kick off the awards show (though she showed up FOUR HOURS late), and in a dazzling black, semi-sheer Roberto Cavalli dress, she set the bar crazy high with a transcendent performance of her new song, “Meteorite.”
Mariah Carey Performs At World Music Awards
Mariah looked absolutely stunning belting out her energetic new track. Fireworks exploded around her and backup dancers did their thing, but all eyes were really on the pop goddess.
Though as we said, it did take Mariah a pretty long time to get on stage. Mariah’s Monaco launch party for her album, Me. I Am Mariah … The Elusive Chanteuse, was held up for four hours, which delayed her arrival at the WMAs as a result. “We don’t know why Mariah is late, she’s just being Mariah,” the ceremony’s spokesperson told The Mirror. But Mariah seemed to make a point of making up for lost time when she finally did show up.
We really can’t think of a more interesting way to start the WMAs, which also featured performances by Miley Cyrus, Jason Derulo, Fall Out Boy, and Ricky Martin. That group definitely had a hard time topping Mariah!
Mariah Carey Becomes WMA’s Pop Icon
Mariah didn’t just have the honor of opening the World Music Awards though — she was also presented with the Pop Icon Award! The WMAs announced on May 11 that Mariah would be receiving the award after having sold over 200 million albums and holding the record for most number one hit singles in America.
The singer is now arguably the most decorated artist in WMA history — the ceremony has previously also honored her with the Legend, Diamond, and Millennium Awards. And watching her take the stage at the 2014 WMAs, it wasn’t hard to see why Mariah has racked up so many awards.
