How sad. The pregnant Sudanese woman who has been condemned for her Christianity finally gave birth to her second child, a baby girl. Meriam Yahya Ibrahim, 27, will be allowed to nurse her daughter before she is whipped and hanged for her religion.
Meriam Yahya Ibrahim, 27, gave birth to her second child five days earlier while shackled to the floor inside a filthy Sudan prison. The mother of two made headlines after a Sudan court sentenced her to a horrific death solely because of her Christianity, which has since sparked international outrage. Meriam’s American husband, Daniel Wani, is desperately fighting for her freedom before it’s too late.
Pregnant Sudanese Woman Gives Birth In Prison
This story continues to break our hearts.
Meriam Ibrahim gave birth to her second child one week early on Tuesday, May 27. According to her husband, her original due date was June 1.
Despite the horrific conditions of Meriam’s prison, her lawyer, Mohaned Mustafa Elnour, told the Daily Mail that this was a little bit of “good news” for the family.
“This is some good news in what has been a terrible ordeal for Meriam,” he said during an interview after the baby’s birth. “I am planning to visit her with her husband Daniel later today.”
“I think they are going to call the baby Maya.”
Meriam has been imprisoned and shackled to the floor by her ankles since a Sudanese court found her guilty of apostasy and adultery on May 15.
The court has allowed Meriam the time to give birth and nurse her baby, but once that ends she will be punished for adultery by 100 lashes, followed by death by hanging for apostasy. For those of you that are unaware, apostasy is the “abandonment” of a religion — which Meriam is accused of doing to her Muslim heritage, despite being raised by a Christian mother.
Making matters even worse, her 20-month-old son, Martin, is locked in the cell with her. His father Daniel is not allowed to care for him because the boy is considered a Muslim, while Daniel is an American Christian.
In the meantime, Daniel and Mohaned are working together in hopes of finding a way to save Meriam.
According to an Islamic Sharia judge, the only way Meriam’s life can be saved is if she renounces her Christianity and declares herself a Muslim.
This is so sad. We truly hope Daniel and Mohaned are able to save Meriam before it’s too late.
