A woman who was abducted from her home in Southern California when she was just 15 has been found alive 10 years later, after enduring a decade of physical and sexual abuse. On May 22, police revealed that her alleged kidnapper, a man who lived with her family at the time of the abduction, has been arrested.
A 25-year-old California woman who was kidnapped a decade ago and forced to marry her captor and have his child has been found alive. The victim, whose name has not been released, contacted the police on May 19 after reaching out to her sister on Facebook. Her alleged captor, Isidro Garcia, 41, was arrested on May 20 and charged with kidnapping, rape and false imprisonment.
California Abducted Woman Found Alive: Girl Kidnapped At 15 Found 10 Years Later
Isidro had been living with the woman’s family in California at the time of her disappearance, the Santa Ana Police Department said in a statement. He allegedly began abusing the victim in June, 2004 while he was dating and living with her mother in Santa Ana, Orange County, according to BBC News. The abuse started four months after the victim moved to the U.S. from Mexico.
The suspect allegedly attacked the girl’s mother in August, drugged the victim and locked her in a garage in Compton, in Los Angeles county, police said.
“Over the course of the following months and years, Mr. Garcia repeatedly told the victim her family had given up looking for her, and if she tried to go back to them, the family would be deported,” police said.
The girl tried to escape twice but Isidro allegedly captured her again and severely beat her.
“Even with the opportunity to escape, after years of physical and mental abuse, the victim saw no way out of her situation and lived a life with Garcia under sustained physical and mental abuse,” police said.
Woman Was Forced To Marry Her Alleged Captor & Have His Child
Isidro and the victim worked together at a night cleaning service, and he allegedly sexually abused her frequently. In 2007, he forced her to marry him and in 2012, they had a child together. Police told reporters that Isidro had “brainwashed” the young woman, but after she spoke with her sister on Facebook and learned that her mother was still searching for her, she realized that she needed to escape her captor.
She called the police on May 19 to report her abduction and Isidro was arrested the next day.
The woman tearfully spoke out in an emotional interview with KABC television, saying, “I don’t have a life all these 10 years. I was very afraid about everything. I was alone – I think I was alone, but I never was… My family was with me.”
This is truly a shocking and tragic story but we are so relieved that this brave young woman was finally able to escape her abductor and return to her family.
