Caleb Johnson and Jena Irene performed for America’s votes one last time on part 1 of the ‘American Idol’ finale on May 20, but the biggest question we have is… are they still going to go to prom together? Or are things about to get awkward in their BFFship?
Part 2 of the American Idol finale airs May 21 at 8:00pm ET, and BFFs Caleb Johnson and Jena Irene are battling it out for the title. Is their friendship about to get incredibly awkward? More importantly, are they still going to go to prom together? We caught up with the two of them after the May 20 episode and they told HollywoodLife.com all about how they thought they performed at the finale, and how their friendship will fare after one of them is crowned the winner!
‘American Idol': Caleb Johnson & Jena Irene Still Going To Prom?
“Yes. It’s going to get totally awkward,” Jena told us of her friendship with Caleb post-finale. “No, we’re extremely happy, no matter what happens. We’ve had a bunch of pep talks, especially leading up to tonight, and I’m so thankful that we’re even here. I surpassed my goal. I wanted top 5 so just to be here is amazing.” No drama there, we suppose!
While we’ve known for a while that Jena and Caleb were going to prom together since the April 16 episode, we never actually saw the invitation go down until the May 20 episode. It was super sweet — the two of them were backstage when Jena popped the question, Caleb said yes, and they hugged. How romantic! Just kidding — these two are clearly the most platonic of BFFs.
After the May 7 episode, Caleb told us that the two of them may not even be able to hit up prom because they “might be doing stuff with Idol. But if not we are still going, it’s going to be so much fun. We’re going to cause a lot of trouble,” Caleb told us, laughing. “Probably p*** a lot of people off!”
‘American Idol': Jena Irene Wishes She Had ‘Done A Little Better’ On The Finale
And how did Jena and Caleb think that they performed on the May 20 episode? “One thing I wish I could have done a little better is a little better breath control in the first song,” Jena revealed to HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY. “My adrenaline was going and I opened up the show and it was great but I was just a little too stoked to be on stage first, but what I really liked was my last performance. It was the last song and performance I was going to give before voting was up for the whole season so I kind of just took it in and I was singing my song, which is available on iTunes.”
“Even what she was just talking about – the adrenaline stuff – just trying to control that was the biggest thing because we saw all those people out there – that is the biggest crowd that I’ve ever performed in front of so it was just a surreal moment,” Caleb piped in. “I almost lost it right there for one second everything almost went out of my brain: how to sing, how to breathe, how to fart – like all this stuff but I had a blast and that was the biggest thing – breath control, trying control my breath. Getting focused as much as possible.”
Look forward to the finale, HollywoodLifers — Caleb will be singing with ’80s rock band Kiss! He has a Gene Simmons impression that we dearly hope we’ll see, and Jena will be singing with Paramore! It’s going to be an amazing finish to a stellar season, so be sure to tune in. Who are you voting for? Who will be the next American Idol? Let us know!
