Season 13 of American Idol is about to wrap and on the May 20 episode, Caleb Johnson and Jena Irene had their last chance to prove to America which of them should move on to become the next American Idol. Read on to find out what they sang and how well they performed, and be sure to vote and comment and let us know who YOU think should win!
‘American Idol’ Recap:
For the finale, Jena and Caleb will each be singing three songs; Simon Fuller‘s choice (he’s the creator of American Idol — no pressure), contestants’ choice, and then they’ll perform their would-be winners’ singles.
The episode is just one short hour long (bless), so let’s get to the performances!
‘American Idol’ Recap: Jena & Caleb Perform Simon Fuller’s Choices
1. Jena Irene, “Dog Days Are Over,” by Florence + The Machine
Is there a more perfect song for Jena than this one? She totally killed it, but it was a biiiit shaky at the beginning — as Keith Urban told her, she had some breath control issues due to her adrenaline being totally jacked.
2. Caleb Johnson, “Dream On,” by Aerosmith
The first time Caleb sang an Aerosmith song, it went over like a lead balloon. He totally biffed “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing,” but it looks like Caleb doesn’t just have an Aerosmith aversion — I don’t even have words for Caleb’s performance of “Dream On”. Jennifer Lopez was air-screaming the high notes, air-drumming the end of the song, and Harry Connick Jr. reminded Caleb that his voice is also amazing when it’s low and tense instead of screaming all the time — not that that doesn’t have its place!
‘American Idol’ Recap: Jena & Caleb Perform Contestants’ Choice
1. Jena Irene, “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” by Elvis Presley
In a wise move, Jena chose to sing the song that made Jennifer so emotional that she got up and kissed her! (HollywoodLife.com can tell you exclusively that JLo smells “really good” — you’re welcome for that.) This performance was even more emotional the second time around — Jena’s most amazing performances are always behind the piano, and while she shouldn’t necessarily just stay in her wheelhouse, I wish we had got to see more of it over the season! However, whatever she has been doing has been obviously been working for her, sooo… never mind, I know nothing.
2. Caleb Johnson, “Maybe I’m Amazed,” by Paul McCartney
Caleb made another incredibly wise choice by choosing this song — it went over so well the first time, and it proved to Harry and to the voting audience that Caleb can, indeed, sing it soft and strong. Like Jena before him, he sang this even better the second time. Jennifer thought he was holding back, however — holding back a head bang, specifically, and that he needed to put more effort into singing emotionally than singing powerfully, as he was certainly belting by the end.
Harry announced that Caleb essentially won the first round, and that Jena won the second round. According to this new arbitrary points system, it’s a tie!
‘American Idol’ Recap: Jena & Caleb Perform Their Winners’ Singles
1. Jena Irene, “We Are One”
This is Jena’s winner’s single! It’s a good jam. You should go listen to it right now. Harry gave her a nice compliment, telling her that her performance was just as strong live as it was in the studio. They’re rushing through the show at this point, so the judges didn’t say too much else.
2. Caleb Johnson, “As Long As You Love Me”
Sorry to say it, but Jena’s single is way better. Like, times a million. Maybe the studio version is better? Anyway, regardless of whether you like the song or not, I think everyone can agree that he totally went for it, which is what the judges tended to agree upon. No real comment on the song itself, though, as they did with Jena.
To close out the show, the Top 13 hit the stage to perform Kelly Clarkson‘s “Breakaway” — looking forward to the finale tomorrow when we’ll get to see past Idols — including my best girl, Malaya Watson — perform!
What did you think of Caleb and Jean’s last votable performances, HollywoodLifers?! Who’s got your vote? Whose original song is better? Vote above and comment below!
