The moment that ‘Dancing With The Stars’ fans have been waiting for finally arrived on May 20 when a champion for Season 18 was granted the mirror ball trophy!
Season 18 of Dancing With The Stars wrapped on May 20, and Amber Riley was unseated as reigning champ as a new star took her place, taking home the coveted mirror ball trophy. Only three couples were left — Meryl Davis & Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Candace Cameron Bure & Mark Ballas, and Amy Purdy & Derek Hough — but who took home the prize? Read on for our recap and find out!
‘Dancing With The Stars’ Recap: Star-Studded Performances From Ariana Grande, Amber Riley & More
For the finale, fans were asked on the May 19 episode to choose which freestyle dance they wanted to see again, and James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd won the vote by a landslide! It was so great to see them perform the same freestyle they did on the night they got so rudely eliminated in favor of Candace & Mark. Also, will definitely watch James dance with a bo staff any ol’ time.
Next up is the team dance, where the three remaining couples as well as eliminated contestants Danica McKellar and Val Chmerkovskiy danced a crazy energetic Latin-inspired dance to Ricky Martin‘s “Livin’ La Vida Loca”. Obviously, Meryl and Maks were preeetty close to each other throughout. Preetty, preeeetty close.
In a taped segment, each of the contestants talked about their competitors. There was a lot of to-do about how Meryl has made Maks gentler and what she’s been able to bring out of him. Is he really all that calmer, though? Hm. Color us a little unconvinced.
Next up, a performance of “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea! For the first weird technical difficulty of the night, her earpiece seemed to cut out and she wasn’t able to sing! Watch her performance blunder HERE!
Amber Riley was slated to perform her song “Colorblind”, but the show came back from commercial just as she was finishing up! It was really strange. The reigning champ should have gotten more respect than that! Read all about the weirdness HERE.
Eliminated contestant Cody Simpson hit the stage to sing his hit song “Surfboard”, and was super cute doing it. Read all about his performance HERE. It was great to see him rock the house after leaving the show far, far too soon.
Olympic champions Charlie and Meryl danced together for the first time on DWTS, which we’re sure that a lot of Americans have been dying to see, but their performance, too, was cut off!
Amber Riley hit the stage once again with a proper introduction to sing “Do Your Thing” by Basement Jaxx — she looked amazing in a gold flapper dress. Unlike her (brief) performance of “Colorblind”, Amber was dancing all around the stage for this one, reminding the voting audience why they helped put her through for the win! Love her.
The next big performance was Ariana Grande‘s “Problem”, which she last sang live at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards. Another strange thing — Iggy didn’t show up onstage to perform her rap verse! Why wouldn’t she have? They did so at the BBMAs, and we all know Iggy was right there! Could she be annoyed with the show for their mess-up? Details on Ariana’s performance HERE.
‘Dancing With The Stars’ Recap: The Stars Dance Fusion
The winner will be determined not only by the voting audience, but by their scores in the fusion dances — which each pair has only 24 hours to learn.
1. Amy Purdy & Derek Hough
For the first fusion of the evening, Amy and Derek performed an Argentine Tango fused with a Cha-cha-cha. They received a perfect score of 30/30! Not the hugest surprise.
2. Candace Cameron Bure & Mark Ballas
Candace and Mark danced a Samba and Quickstep fusion, which was fine, I guess, but it was a bit sleepy for a Quickstep — even if it was a fusion. They earned a 27/30.
3. Meryl Davis & Maksim Chmerkovskiy
Lastly, the most rumored of rumored couples, Meryl & Maks, danced a Foxtrot and Cha-cha-cha fusion. As ever, it was super sexy, and made us wonder if these two will eeever admit that they’re more than just dance partners. I mean, they must be, right? “The earth is moving for me,” said judge Bruno Tonioli. They received a 30/30, putting them at 90/90 for the two-part finale. Can they just have the trophy already?
‘Dancing With The Stars’ Recap: The Final Results
Before we can hear the final results, Christina Perri hit the stage to perform “Human”, to which, if you’ll recall, Amy and Derek danced a super emotional contemporary performance in Week 3.
The first couple to go home is Candace and Mark — their lucky streak had to end sometime!
In news that will surprise exactly no one… Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy are taking home the mirror ball trophy! Congrats!!! Could it really have gone to anyone else? Not only has their dancing been totally on point all season, but their scorching chemistry made for can’t-miss TV. Maks even said he wanted Meryl’s babies!
And how great is it that this is Maks’ first-ever win? Maybe he’ll be a little less grumpy for Season 19 — who’s with me?
We have to say, though — we were kinda bummed that Meryl & Maks didn’t celebrate their win with a big ol’ on-camera smooch!
What do you think, HollywoodLifers? Were you happy to see Meryl and Maks take it home? Were you hoping it would go to Amy Purdy, or Candace Cameron Bure? Let us know!
