There’s only one week left until ‘The Voice’ crowns its winner, and the top five proved that it’s anyone’s game tonight! Christina Grimmie, Jake Worthington, Kat Perkins, Kristen Merlin and Josh Kaufman impressed during the live shows.
The Voice headed into the semifinals on May 12, and each singer stunned with two songs — one chosen by their coach and one selected by themselves. All 10 performances were amazing, but who was the best? Keep reading to find out!
Usher Opens Up The Night
As if Usher didn’t bring enough star power, Mark Wahlberg was in the audience watching the live shows! Carson chatted with Mark and then we all got to see a preview of Mark’s upcoming new movie, Transformers!
The Top Five Go Up For The First Round
Kristen Merlin was the first contestant to go up for the night. She was decked out in a crystalized collared shirt and her performance shined, just like she did! She sang Miranda Lambert‘s “Gunpowder & Lead,” and Blake Shelton approved of Kristen’s rendition of his wife’s song — that’s the ultimate compliment!
Josh Kaufman was the second singer of the night, singing John Legend‘s “All Of Me,” which he dedicated to his family. He hit every single note perfectly, and also hit the judges with emotion. “You have such a gift for reaching people with the romantic song,” said Shakira. Adam Levine said that Josh reminds him each week how stupid he his because he’s no longer on his team. To say the least, he was completely impressed. Blake called Josh’s performance “beautiful” and “powerful,” and even told him that it’s not even a doubt in his mind that he’ll be in the finale! Josh’s coach, Usher, said that he’s able to “touch the hearts of America” and complimented him for dedicating the song to his wife and family.
Kat Perkins sang “Chandelier” by Sia, appropriately in the midst of a chandelier-studded stage. Her voice was a bit pitchy tonight, but nonetheless, she did a nice job. We have to give her credit for choosing such a difficult song. And the judges did, too. Blake said that she does everything right and it’ll be hard to her to beat herself, Shakira mentioned that the song was an extremely hard choice and Adam said that not only should Kat be in the finale, but she’s one of the best singers that the show has ever had! Oh yeah, he also said that she’s fought her way through eliminations and has still proven herself to be amazing.
Jake Worthington put on a classic country performance for his first round. His voice was pitch-perfect and so was he strumming his guitar. Usher said that he doesn’t even like country music, but Jake sold him with his final last note! Adam said that Jake is as real as it gets — so real that he should be wearing a “made in America” stamp! Blake said that he “couldn’t be more proud of that performance,” and he needs to be on the radio with country music.
Christina Grimmie was the final singer of the first round, performing Imogen Heap‘s “Hide and Seek.” She definitely took a risk with such a unique song that showed off different parts of her vocal range, and it paid off! She proved that she can really sing anything. Usher said that he was “a bit disconnected,” but it was a “great risk” and he ultimately felt connected to her at the end of her song. Shakira didn’t seem all too impressed either, but she said that it was great! But did her coach think that risk was worth it? “Yeah, of course it was,” said Adam, complimenting Christina for being refreshing and different and said he stands behind her!
The Second Round Brings Out The Best In The Singers
The second round opened up with Josh who chose an upbeat song this time, in comparison to his love ballad in the first round. He was incredible! Usher gave him a standing ovation! The audience cheered so loudly for so long that Adam didn’t even have time to critique him, but just said that he was amazing. Blake said Josh is a “natural-born killer singer.” And, of course, Usher said “I feel like this is it.” Wow!
Kat took on Frozen‘s hit song “Let It Go.” She put a rock spin into the Disney ballad, and she impressed, like always. Blake said that no matter what happens on this show, he can’t wait to buy her record to get pumped up! Usher said “you murdered it,” and Shakira acknowledged her unexpected song choice, which showed off another side of her. “It does not get better than Kat Perkins,” is what Adam had to say for himself!
“Foolish Games” by Jewel was the next song to be reinvented by Kristen who definitely made Shakira proud with her lovely and powerful performance. This might have been her best yet! Blake said she was so connected, dumping her heart and soul. “Man, that was moving,” he said. Shakira said that she’s so happy because Kristen just had one of those amazing moments!
Christina took on another risk with “Some Night.” She hit all of the right notes, but it was definitely a different type of a song to show off her vocal range. Her performance was upbeat and fun with white clothing, black lights and colorful balloons falling at the end when she hit an amazing high note. Blake joked, “I think you just won The Voice!” because of the celebration of balloons, adding, “I liked the hell out of that!” Shakira pointed out how creative and independent Christina is, and Adam gave her credit for sticking to who she is: “You’re bringing people with you on your own journey, it’s yours!”
Jake wrapped up the night with the lovely ballad, “Heaven,” and it sure was heavenly! He hit every note perfectly once again, and although it wasn’t a country song, Jake stayed true to to his grit and country roots. All of the coaches complimented him and also mentioned that he has been experiencing throat issues, and he still impressed!
