In a show chock-full of the most iconic princesses in fairy tale history, the last few moments of the Season Three finale injected some new blood into Storybrooke, guaranteeing that next season will be even wilder — and even better.
The Season Three finale of Once Upon a Time wrapped up everything pretty nicely, with Emma (Jennifer Morrison) finally embracing Storybrooke and her family, but it was the episode’s last few seconds that has everyone talking. Emma’s time-traveling portal accidentally brought back a shocking new character that will slam together the classic characters of OUAT with the new guard of fairy tales.
‘Once Upon A Time’ Introduces A New Princess
Though we never saw her face when she emerged from Emma’s portal, all anyone needed to see was the jagged bolt of ice she shot out of her hand to realize who had arrived in Storybrooke. That’s right — Elsa from the 2013 breakout movie, Frozen.
Since the makers OUAT just love making us thirst for more, they dropped the curtain on the third season before we could learn pretty much anything about Elsa and her relationship with the show’s narrative — why she was in Rumple’s high security vault, for instance, or if her sister Anna is somewhere — but it seemed pretty clear that she was furious about something, and I’m going to spend all summer coming up with theories to explain why.
But the details hardly matter. The bottom line is that Elsa has arrived, and Once Upon a Time has never had more promise and potential heading into a new season. Can I get a “Let It Go?”
‘OUAT’: With Elsa, The Show Can Go Anywhere
Up until now, OUAT has drawn on mostly classic fairy tale characters. They tested the modern waters with Mulan at the beginning of this season, but taking a stab at Elsa, the star of the biggest fairy tale movie in years, feels much more momentous. Bringing the Frozen queen into the fold will push the show to places it’s never been, and whereas most of OUAT‘s previous storylines have been inspired by tales already told, Elsa, a princess who doesn’t have as much pre-established mythology behind her, will allow the show to weave wholly new stories all on their own.
And bringing in such a foreign character will bring new sides out of everyone — Emma, Regina, Mary Margaret, and especially Rumple it seems.
Elsa’s arrival on Once Upon a Time also opens a portal for more modern characters to jump through and join Storybrooke. Like I said, more Frozen characters like Princess Anna, Kristoff and Olaf (please!) could be joining Elsa, and more modern fairy tales are now fair game too. There’s already been talk of getting Merida from Brave onto the show!
OUAT is at a serous crossroads in the series, but with Elsa leading the way, the sky really is the limit. Don’t you agree, HollywoodLifers? Let me know.
