Rumple may have killed Zelena, but the green cloud that emanated from her body afterwards was a foreboding preview of the drama that’ll unfold in the two-hour finale. Get ready!
Uh oh! Looks like Rumple killing Zelena caused more problems than it solved, and just when everything in Storybrooke looked like it was turning around for the better, Emma, Hook and company now have a whole new mess to deal with.
Emma Hearts NY, But Falls Into The Past
First, there are still some good times — Mary Margaret and David have a newborn son and Regina is actually in a good, loving relationship with Robin Hood.
But the newborn’s naming ceremony gets rudely interrupted by two things — one, Emma breaks the news that she wants to move herself and Henry back to New York and two, everyone realizes that Zelena’s time portal is open (the latter is a much more pressing matter).
“A trip to the past could have catastrophic repercussions,” Rumple says about a minute before Emma falls into Zelena’s portal back into the past. Hook, whose trusty appendage briefly came in handy for once, decides to follow her down the rabbit hole.
To get back to Storybrooke, Emma and Hook have to find Rumple, but they also have to be sure not to fudge up this timeline, because any changes they cause can do serious damage to everyone in the present. We know this because literally everyone is explaining this concept (it’s called the butterfly effect) over and over again.
Unfortunately, Emma snaps a tree branch and ruins Snow White’s ambush on Prince Charming, which means she ruined the moment her parents first met, which means they may never fall in love, which means Emma may never be born.
Will Snow White & Prince Charming Fall In Love?
So the task changes from getting back to the present to making sure Snow and the Prince meet. Hook poses as past version of Hook (while Emma and her boobs distract him) to convince Snow White to steal the prince’s ring. The present-day pirate also totally blocks his former self from a guaranteed hookup with Emma. That’s even worse than breaking guy code, bro.
Just an aside for a second? I just wanna say that the first hour of this finale was an amazing showcase for Emma and Hook’s relationship. Those two crazy kids really have something!
Back to the action — at Prince Charming’s pre-wedding ball, Snow White’s thievery goes according to plan, except Snow FORGETS to take the ring, and Emma is seized by the Evil Queen after assaulting one of her guards. So actually, nothing went according to plan.
What A Daughter Will Do For Her Parents’ Love
After catching Snow White with a net, Prince Charming, Snow and Hook agree to team up to free Emma and retrieve the prince’s ring from the Evil Queen’s dungeon. They only have 24 hours, because the queen has apparently set a mass execution date that cannot be pushed back.
But who says Emma needs their help! Thanks to something she learned from Neal in Portland, Emma is able to pick the lock to her cell. She does eff up a little bit though, freeing her cellmate and once again changing the past. (Emma, remember that snapped branch back in hour one!? Don’t you learn!?)
On the main floor of the castle, Snow’s brought to the stake to be burned after her dark fairy dust fails miserably. Emma, Prince Charming, and Hook watch helplessly as Snow is killed by the Evil Queen.
Somehow though, Emma doesn’t disintegrate after her mom’s killed before she could ever be burned. That’s because Snow used her dark fairy dust to turn into a ladybug and flee the fire! “Looks like we’re back on track, love,” Hook tells an increasingly enlightened, less-likely-to-move-to-NYC-when-this-is-all-over Emma.
Emma & Hook: Back To The Future
And Hook’s right — now he and Emma have to hook back up with Rumple so he can help them get back to the present. But he’s not really interested in helping anymore, so instead of opening up a portal, he puts them in the highest security lockbox he has.
But after finally admitting that Storybrooke is her home, Emma regains her magic, opens up her own time-traveling portal and brings herself, Hook, and the prisoner she freed from the Evil Queen back to the present.
And so all seems happily ever after, with Emma canceling her plans to go back to New York and finally giving David and Mary Margaret the love they deserve, and the two royals finally announcing the name of their son — Prince Neal.
But there’s one last bit of business for Emma to take care of. And by “business,” I mean Hook; and by “take care of,” I mean makeout with like crazy. After having such an incredible adventure together, these two star-crossed lovers are no longer ships passing in the night.
Meet The Newest ‘Once’ Character
And with Rumple and Belle’s wedding as a backdrop, we see how important love and light are in this magical world. But just as everything seems all flattened and worked out — Emma introduces Regina to her new friend, who just happens to be Robin Hood’s wife! They have a teary reunion while Regina literally watches her relationship with Robin crumble before her eyes. So much for the good Regina — Emma totally just brought back the Evil Queen.
Another thing Emma brought back from the past? Oh nothing, EXCEPT FOR FREAKING QUEEN ELSA FROM FROZEN!!! Wow. Season four can’t come soon enough.
