Florida State University quarterback Jameis Winston had a rather unusual run-in with the law on April 28. The star athlete was arrested after he allegedly got caught stealing crab legs! Although he will not be doing hard time for this minor offense, we can’t help but wonder if the tasty seafood treat was worth all the trouble!
College athletes do the darndest things! Reigning Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston was issued a citation for allegedly shoplifting crab legs from a Florida restaurant on April 28. The mega-athlete was charged with a minor misdemeanor for the alleged crime.
Jameis Winston Arrested — Football Star Busted For Shoplifting Crab Legs
Apparently Jameis has such a passion for crab legs that he could not pass them up when he entered a local Florida supermarket. On April 28, police got a report stating that the athlete was seen stealing $32.72 worth of crab legs from a Publix supermarket. The cops went to his house and he claimed to have forgotten to pay — but that seems a little fishy since he reportedly made no effort to return them to the store.
Jameis was not arrested; instead, he got an adult citation as punishment, ESPN reports.
“They commonly give them to juveniles on first criminal offenses,” a source explained to SB Nation. “They are now doing it for minor misdemeanors for adults to lower crime rate.”
Unfortunately the citation is the least of Jameis’ worries.
“As a result of his citation, Jamies was also suspended from the Florida State baseball team,” coach Mike Martin stated, according to TMZ.
In addition to his citation and suspension, Jameis will be fined $30 and he will be required to do some community service. Lucky for him, if he completes all of his hours and does everything he’s supposed to do, the citation will not show up on his record. If he fails to complete the assigned 20 hours of community service, he could be prosecuted for shoplifting.
Jameis Winston Previous Run-In With The Law
This crab leg incident is not the 20-year-old’s first run-in with the law. In December, 2013,the state attorney in Florida decided not to charge Winston after he was accused of sexually assaulting a woman at an off-campus apartment on Dec. 7, 2012, ESPN reports .The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights has opened an investigation into FSU’s handling of the allegations against Jameis to see if the university mishandled the case.
The list doesn’t end there. In 2012, he and other teammates were questioned after 13 windows were broken at an apartment building near the school’s stadium. In July, 2013, a Burger King employee called the cops, complaining that the athlete had been stealing soda. Seriously, we hope this guy learns to tame his cravings.
