How terrifying. The Anaheim Ducks defenseman became the latest athlete to suffer a gruesome injury when he snapped his right leg during an awkward play in the Ducks’ playoff game against the Dallas Stars on April 21. Watch a clip of Stephane’s injury below, if you’ve got the stomach for it.
No athlete is safe — not even hockey players decked out in pads. Stephane Robidas joined the likes of Kevin Ware and NaVorro Bowman on April 21, as a check from an opponent resulted in the Anaheim Ducks defenseman snapping his right leg on the ice.
Stephane Robidas Suffers Broken Leg
After squirming on the ice on his knees, Stephane slammed his hands on the ice in frustration, knowing that he was hurt badly. Unable to put any weight on his leg, the hockey player was eventually helped off the ice by teammate Teemu Selanne, and the Ducks later confirmed Stephane’s leg fracture in a tweet:
INJURY UPDATE: #NHLDucks Robidas has a fractured right leg, just above the previous fracture, and is being sent to the hospital.
— Anaheim Ducks (@AnaheimDucks) April 22, 2014
The tweet references a previous injury — Stephane initially sustained a right leg fracture earlier in the season in November.
It was certainly an awkward but scary play that resulted in Stephane’s broken leg. Just 42 seconds into the game’s second period, Stephane lunged to clear the puck away from his net when opposing Dallas Stars player Ryan Garbutt came flying in and crashed into Stephane’s lower body. The 37-year-old’s leg buckled sideways under the pressure, and many immediately knew that he had sustained a bad break.
The irony is that Stephane spent most of his career — 11 seasons — playing for the Dallas Stars. The Dallas fans still stood by him as he winced on the ice, and they chanted his name as he was led to the locker room.
Stephane Robidas Joins Kevin Ware & More
After Kevin Ware’s bone popped out of his skin during a Louisville college basketball game in March 2013, and 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman snapped his leg on a goal line play against the Seattle Seahawks on Jan. 19, it was brutally clear how dangerous professional sports are. Stephane’s harsh injury only reinforces that.
We wish Stephane the best, and who knows, maybe his injury will spur the Ducks to a championship, like Kevin’s did for the Louisville Cardinals.
