‘Awkward’s Fourth Season — Jillian Rose Reed Interview
After the April 15 season premiere of Awkward, we were left with LOTS of questions!
Thankfully, Awkward‘s own Jillian was more than happy to answer those questions EXCLUSIVELY for HollywoodLife.com. Yay, Tamara! She always has the scoop, right?
First and foremost, what is going on with Tamara and Jake (Brett Davern)? It’s bad enough their personalities continue to clash, but now they have problems in the bedroom, too. When we asked Jillian if the couple were on the rocks, she was pretty straight forward.
“Yeah… you could say that,” the actress told us. “I think both characters are going through a lot senior year, figuring out what they want their last year as high school students to be. They’ve had their ups and downs and the ‘bedroom problems’ seem to be a bit of a breaking point!”
Oh no! What if we can’t handle a Jakara break up?!
“We teased in the trailer that Jake actually dumps Tamara. This season you get to see what the after math of that is and then how the couple recovers,” Jillian revealed. “It’s been really fun to film, we haven’t really seen Tamara truly heartbroken yet.”
“There’s a lot going on with the two of them this season,” Jillian explains. “Lots of drama! Matty and Jenna are trying to get back to a place of friendship since Jenna cheated last year. They just have to figure out what kind of ‘friendship’ they want to have.”
How ‘Awkward’ Will Be Different This Season
After the last season of Awkward, we were kind of over the melodramatic Jenna drama. Watching her struggle over Matty is always fun, but can we be sure things won’t take a turn for the dark side again?
“We went to a darker place with Jenna last year, so we really wanted to get back to the comedy this season.” Jillian assured us. Phew!
And what about all those sexy jokes and steamy scenes? Awkward sure has gotten more sexual this season!
“We have new show runners this season, so this is ‘Awkward.’ through their eyes. I think they’ve done a really good job of keeping the tone of the show relatively the same, but there will be some changes.” Jillian explained. “The jokes are funny, yeah… they’re a bit more risque, but very very funny!”
Okay, but it’s senior year for the gang now. When they graduate, what does that mean for the future of Awkward? Jillian doesn’t think we should worry.
“I guess we’ll all have to wait and see! I have yet to see what the back 10 episodes have in store for us… but I can tell you that the show doesn’t have to end just because high school did.” Good point!
What About The ‘New Kids’ In Town?
While Jillian also told us that Ming will definitely not be returning to the series because actress Jessica Lu decided to move on, there are four new characters to replace her.
The new kids consist of Eva (Elizabeth Whitson), Theo (Monty Greer), Cole (Evan Crooks), and Tyler (Kofi Siriboe).
Eva is the new girl in town, while Theo and Cole are Tamara’s new minions. Tyler’s story is the most outlandish, as he is the newly adopted brother of Lissa (Greer Grammer).
During the season premiere Eva caught Jake’s eye, but she seems too nice to turn on Tamara and Jenna. Should we be worried about her anyway?
“She is nice, but we have to tread lightly with new girls, right? That’s all I’m going to say.” Ugh! Thanks for totally teasing us with that answer, Jillian.
Eva isn’t the only one we should be concerned about — Tyler is definitely in town to stir the pot a bit. But thankfully, Cole and Theo are the comic relief of the series. So, what’s it like having new blood on set?
“It’s been fun! It’s refreshing to bring in new faces to our fourth season,” Jillian shared. “Keeps it from getting stale. Not to mention they are super funny!”
