‘The Voice’ kicked off it’s live shows on April 21, and the Top 12 took the spotlight! In true live TV form, a technical failure occurred and contestant Kristen Merlin’s microphone went out! The singer took it like a pro and still wowed the judges! Who else stunned with their performance?
The Voice Season 6 has brought on some of the best talent in reality singing competition show history, and the live shows’ debut proved just that! Frontrunners Bria Kelly, Delvin Choice, Sisaundra Lewis, Josh Kaufman and Christina Grimmie all rocked the stage with their songs, and even Kristen Merlin proved to be the one to beat, despite a technical failure! Keep reading to find out who is good enough to make it to the next round!
Bria Kelly Kicks Off The Live Shows & Is Followed Up By Another Frontrunner
Bria Kelly kicked of the Season 6 live shows with a tall order — Adele‘s “Rolling In The Deep.” Of course, she killed it because she’s incredibly talented! All of the judges had positive reviews for the teen sensation and her coach Usher commended her for taking a stab at a contemporary record, since she’s known for her bluesy flare. “I felt fire in your voice,” Usher told her. “You gave me the energy that I asked…and you gave a great performance.”
Next up was Delvin Choice who stepped into the spotlight sporting a bright blue suit to belt out “Unchained Melody.” And boy, did he! The audience was swaying their hands in the air, along to his amazing performance, and the judges were clapping for him. So how were their reviews? Black Shelton said he did a great job and complimented his hair! Usher gave him kudos for making the song upbeat and happy, while Shakira said that his falsettos were “perfect” and “superb.” Coach Adam Levine recalled that Delvin was a bit weary of taking this song when he was assigned it for his first live show, but Adam says that it “all came to fruition,” and expressed how proud he was. He even got goosebumps!
The Top 12 Brings Their Best To The Live Shows
Team Shakira’s Dani Moz was up next with Pink‘s “Learn To Love Again.” She delivered a very powerful performance, which impressed all of the judges. Adam said it was “fantastic,” Blake said that when she hit her high note, she “changed everything,” and coach Shakira thought she was amazing, calling her out for having the “sickest range!”
Audra McLaughlin was the first from Team Blake to perform. She sang a beautiful ballad, and knocked it out of the park with her strong voice and long, beautiful notes. Her coach, Blake, gave her a standing ovation! Usher started off the judges’ critiques saying that she was “incredible” and even joked that he would have to pee if he held a note for as long as she did! Then, of course, Adam threw some shade at Blake, saying that he probably is peeing. (Oh, boys will be boys.) But in all seriousness, Adam says that he loves to hear her sing, and Blake actually agreed with Adam. At least they can agree on one thing — Audra is amazing! “You, I sware, are one of my favorite country singers,” said Blake. Wow! That’s quite the compliment.
TJ Wilkins took on John Mayer‘s “Waiting On The World To Change,” as the second singer to represent Team Usher. TJ did a great job with the contemporary hit, and Usher complimented him on commanding the audience, saying that this performance was his breakout moment!
Christina Grimmie Takes On Katy Perry’s ‘Dark Horse’
YouTube star Christina Grimmie took on Katy Perry‘s “Dark Horse.” Did the aspiring pop singer give the smash hit justice? Christina has been a standout since the beginning of Season 6, and tonight, she certainly got that same attention. The 20-year old took center stage like it was her job! Dressed in a scandalous leather and metal getup, she belted out Katy’s verses, as she got down on the floor. Whoa!
Blake was wowed by Christina and said that he didn’t understand how such a big voice could come out of such a little body! He also paid her mad respect, admitted that she is “the artist to beat on Adam’s team.” Shakira also had positive praise. She complimented Christina on her range and said that she is so “impressive.” Her coach Adam admitted that he “might as well have been watching the VMAs or something” because she made it her own! Usher followed up Blake, saying that she is the best singer on Adam’s team.
Sisaundra Lewis Brings Her Powerhouse Voice To The Live Shows
No surprise here — Sisaundra killed it. Dressed in a bright orange dress, Sisaundra looked elegant and sounded even more beautiful! “Every time we come out here, you just blow everybody’s socks off,” said Usher who compared Sisaundra to Patti LaBelle! Then her coach, Blake, said that he hopes that she is taking this experience in: “I hope you’re enjoying what’s happening,” he said, adding that “people love you.”
Did you love her? We certainly did!
Kristen Merlin Survives A Major Technical Problem!
Kristen Merlin from Shakira’s team sang next, and she suffered a major technical error, but she took it on like a pro! Her mic went out, but she kept going. A crew member came rushed over to her with a new mic, but it was like Kristen wasn’t even phased by it. She just kept singing her heart out to “Stay” and she sounded amazing (for what we could hear)!
Even Carson Daly commended her for her professionalism, saying that any of the four judges would have done the same thing. These are the live shows, after all!
Adam said that she was put in a scary situation and “handled it so gracefully,” said Adam, adding that it was like nothing happened. “I might have just run off stage!” he admitted, and complimented her again and again and again.
Blake focused on what he could hear, rather than on what was unheard, due to the mic. And he said she was great! Shakira, who gave Kristen a standing ovation, said that she was so mesmerized by her performance and made sure to add that she’s a beautiful person on the outside and inside.
The Final Four Singers Stun The Judges
Kat Perkins followed up Kristen’s technical error, and she rocked it out. Definitely no errors in Kat’s performance! Usher loved her performance and even told her, “You really have what it takes to be on radio right now.” Her coach, Adam, was amazed at how well she took on some of the biggest rockers in the biz — and pulled it off!
Country crooner Jake Worthington took the spotlight next with classic country song “Anymore.” With his signature cowboy hat on, Jake sang a lovely rendition of the slow ballad and he hit all of the right notes. This kid is just so lovable! Shakira agreed, telling Jake that his appeal grows each week, in addition to his progression in music. “When you sing, I believe every word you say,” she said. Jake admitted that he got a bit choked up when he saw his mama in the audience. How sweet! Blake agreed with Shakira, saying that Jake’s pitch was perfect, in addition to his approach: “That what happens with a cowboy like you!”
Tess Boyer was up next with “I’ll Be There For You.” Tess looked hot in a white studded pantsuit, and her performance matched it! She hit all of the high notes and her voice sounded beautiful throughout the entire song. Usher said that Tess has matured by being coached by all of them, and her coach Shakira said that “no one can deny [her] pros, as a technical singer” and added that she nailed it!
Last up was the final singer of the night, Josh Kaufman who stunned with a soulful rendition of Sam Smith‘s “Stay With Me.” Seriously, this guy impresses us every single time! Wearing a vest, tie and fedora, Josh looked like a pro and believe us, he performed like a pro. His song started off understand and ended with a huge bang! All of the coaches told Josh that he was incredible, and Adam admitted that he was “stupid” for not being his coach anymore. Josh’s current coach Usher said that he “took it away,” and even applauded him for his commitment to his family (he’s a dad of two, just like Usher) and music! Usher wrapped up the live shows with an amazing compliment: “You have completely made this my night.”
