On the April 16 episode of ‘American Idol’, Jena Irene shot ahead of the pack as the clear frontrunner to win. But will she have to fight it out against BFF Caleb Johnson for the win? We caught up with them both after their performances — find out what they had to say about it!
When Jena Irene, 17, received a standing ovation from Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez for her performance of Radiohead‘s “Creep,” it became clear that Jena is now officially the one to beat. However, it was also revealed during that episode that Jena and fellow competitor Caleb Johnson, 22, are not only besties — they’re going to prom together! Many are saying that the finale will come down to the two of them — but what do they have to say about it? HollywoodLife.com caught up with Caleb and Jena after the show and they told us what they thought about possibly being in the finale together, and what their prom date will be like!
‘American Idol’: Will Best Friends And Prom Dates Caleb Johnson And Jena Irene Be Fighting For The Win?
Here’s what Caleb had to say about Jena (and about his own prom, which was pretty hilarious, so we left it in):
HollywoodLife.com: Choosing the last song of the night for Jena, what was that like?
Caleb Johnson: Jena kind of reminds me of, I don’t want to say directly Lady Gaga, but when she’s behind the piano it’s this real dramatic haunting dark theatrical stuff that she does for just about every other performance. She has this dark quality and when I was listening to songs that we had to pick, the “Creep” song came up for some reason and I talked to her about it before I gave it to her and she said she’d done a cover of it on the piano. I watched it and was like man, that’s the one. That’s something you completely made your own and put your stamp on and I felt she would do a big powerhouse performance; she has a really pristine, crisp, clear voice and her vowels are crazy. She just had to do that song and I’m so glad she picked it. It was a killer performance and really dramatic, very glam rock, very ’70s and Queen, and she kind of looked like Freddie Mercury at the piano, minus the nasty teeth.
HL: She’s very excited of the prospect of you two going to prom, how did that come about?
CJ: Yes, she just asked me and I said let’s do it. It might be illegal? I’m 22 and she’s 17.
HL: It depends on what you do afterwards…
HL: What would prom night with Caleb be like?
CJ: We’d just go in there, take our clothes off and dance.
HL: What was your prom like?
CJ: My first prom, because I went to my junior prom, my girlfriend at the time she avoided me the whole night. Literally, we go to prom and she ditched me for the whole time.
HL: Where is she now?
CJ: She’s in hell, I– [Laughs] I’m kidding.
HL: Has she reached out to you since you’ve been on the show?
CJ: She did! I’m just like whatever. She actually apologized and said, “Hey, I’m really sorry I ditched you a prom.” I’m like, whatever. She hadn’t talked to me since that moment so how could you call me to tell me that? Just ’cause I’m on TV?
HL: Before your duet there was a sign in the audience that read Caleb and Jena for the finale, what would you think about that happening?
CJ: That would be wonderful, we would go toe to toe with every performance and it would be a big knock out type thing. It would be boom, boom, boom. And whoever wins, wins it. It would be balls to the wall to that point. I think that would be a lot of fun.
HL: Jena said you guys are best friends, but when it boils down to a finale the competition would really play a factor?
CJ: It would but it would be so much fun, I’m telling you, we would try and push each other until we were dead. I think that would actually be good.
HL: It would be a killer finale?
CJ: Oh yeah, me stabbing her and we could do like a horror musical. Oh there’s a new movie coming out with Meatloaf called Stage Fright; it’s a horror/musical movie with a serial killer and Meatloaf who plays a theater director and it looks really campy. Check out the trailer.
‘American Idol’ Interview: Jena Irene Hopes That She Will Be In The Finale With Caleb
And here’s what Jena had to say about BFF Caleb:
HollywoodLife.com: Will it be a Caleb and Jena finale?
Jena Irene: That would be awesome. That’s my hope. Everyone in this competition now is amazing, and I know that every single person in the Top 10 is going to have an amazing career in music for sure and they’re all going to be so successful, but as far as the competition goes, I would love to be in the last two standing with Caleb. It would be an amazing feeling.
HL: What would that do to your best friend status?
JI: At this point, you have to think of it as a friendship until you get on the stage. When you’re getting judged all you can think of is yourself and how you did on the performance and how the judges thought you did, but then you can snap out of it?
HL: Are you really going to prom with him?
JI: Prom is May 30th for my school, so I hope we get to go. We’ve been talking about it for, like, months, so. I really hope he does because I don’t have a prom date!
HL: Will you perform at prom?
JI: God, I hope not.
HL: Why do you want to go with him?
JI: I think we’re like the same person, except I have boobs and he doesn’t. We’re like the same person. We have the same personality. He just makes me laugh so much and we just have the same sense of humor — it’s kind of dirty and twisted. It would be a fun night. He would be a fun date to go with.
So, it looks like Jena and Caleb will be friends to the end — even if the Top 2 comes down to the two of them. Well, except for that part where Caleb will stab her. No big deal.
What do you think, HollywoodLifers? Is the finale going to come down to the two of them? Who’s your pick to win?
