After a short hiatus, ‘The Originals’ returned with an episode that laid down the foundation for one epic showdown.
The April 15 return of The Originals was one to remember. Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Elijah (Daniel Gillies) continued to reign over New Orleans, a celebration ended in tragedy and Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) waged war on the original vampires! Let’s head to the French Quarter!
‘The Originals’ Recap: Ulterior Motives
Man, it’s good to be back in New Orleans. Klaus was still hooking up with Genevieve (Elyse Levesque) and both had ulterior motives to their romantic rendezvous. Klaus painted an exquisite picture of Genevieve as a token to the treaty she signed. He said that the witches needed protection that only he could provide. Above all else, he just wanted her promise of allegiance whenever he would need it.
The witches were busy getting freaky as they tried to restore their power. Monique (Yasmine Al Bustami) channeled the ancestors and revealed it was time to complete the reaping. The fourth harvest girl had to be resurrected, which meant Genevieve had to go.
After forcing Marcel to leave, Elijah was planning some home renovations. Klaus went to his brother and said Genevieve wanted to have a lavish feast for the witches. Elijah was unsure of it all, but Klaus wanted a little bit of fun. Elijah brought up Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) and Klaus wasn’t really concerned about her. He knew she was safer in the bayou with her pack.
Monique went to Genevieve and said it was time for her to sacrifice herself for the harvest. (What an icebreaker.) Genevieve wasn’t going to follow along so easily and told Monique to hold off on the sacrifice. Genevieve wanted to retrieve Esther’s spell book first so that no one could control the witches. The only way Genevieve could get to the spell book was by using Klaus!
Elijah went around town trying to convince those who had signed the treaty to show up for the feast. First up, the humans. However, if the humans followed along, he would owe them a favor. Next, Elijah headed to the bayou to ask for the werewolves attendance. Jackson (Nathan Parsons) and Oliver (Chase Coleman) agreed pretty quickly, which left Elijah questioning them. Elijah told Hayley not to trust them.
Hayley began to believe Elijah’s theory when she saw Oliver and Jackson discreetly talking. She pinned Oliver against the wall and tried to force him to tell what was going on. Jackson didn’t want Hayley to over-exert herself and revealed that the wolves had made an alliance with Klaus that it was going to change everything.
Earlier, Klaus had started working with the werewolves behind Elijah’s back. He summoned Oliver to bring a descendant of his, Carey, to him. Klaus had a ring and needed to know what stone it housed, but Carey didn’t know.
An Affair to Remember
It’s not The Originals without some sort of social function. The feast kicked off with the witches being fawned over in the streets of New Orleans. Davina (Danielle Campbell) and the clan were dressed to the nines with crazy hats in tow. Genevieve knew this was the perfect time to find the spell book and sent one of her minions to find it at Klaus’s compound. However, when the minion arrived, Klaus was there waiting. (Ruh roh.)
Hayley showed up as the werewolf representative, much to Elijah’s delight. Meanwhile, Monique grew jealous of Davina’s popularity and felt that she hadn’t earned her place in the coven or sacrificed enough. Genevieve told Monique to be patient. Later, all the representatives began placing gifts in front of the witches, all except Davina, which Monique loved.
Davina fled the scene and ran into Josh (Steven Krueger). They were just about to leave when Klaus showed up with unfinished business between them. Bad blood still brewed between Davina and Klaus, so Klaus grabbed Josh and called the attention of the crowd. Klaus said that Davina had been ignored and offered her his gift. He revealed that even though Josh was involved in a plot to kill him, he was going to pardon him for Davina. Klaus also had a smaller gift for Davina, which contained a ring and the spell from Esther’s book that makes daylight rings.
Cami (Leah Pipes) crashed the party and tried to appeal to Genevieve to save Father Kieran (Todd Stashwick). Cami had already been to Klaus earlier for help and Klaus then went to Genevieve, but she was only going to help if she got her hands on the spell book. So, when Cami gave Genevieve a gorgeous hair pin as an offering, Genevieve eased up a little. (This wouldn’t last long.)
Marcel had been spending his time stewing over his exile across the river. He was ready to get his power back and he knew the feast was the perfect place to show he was a force to be reckoned with. Multiple men in white showed up at the party and slit their wrists. Elijah told the vampires to remain calm, but chaos ensued. After the massacre, Elijah and Hayley found “There will be no peace” written on the wall. Marcel got confirmation that his message was received, but was concerned for Davina’s safety. However, Elijah showed up angry and ready to fight. He didn’t kill Marcel, but Thierry (Callard Harris) instead. Elijah pulled his classic rip-out-the-heart charade and shoved Thierry’s heart all up in Marcel’s face. (Gross.)
Now, It’s War
Upon learning of Genevieve’s plot to retrieve Esther’s spell book, Klaus planned a shocking way to tell her. He made her open up what she thought was the spell book, only to be shown her minion’s hands. Genevieve threatened Klaus and said she wouldn’t be helping Cami lift Kieran’s hex. Klaus said that if the priest died then she would soon follow, but she knew he was bluffing. She twisted the knife a little bit more by telling Klaus that Cami slept with Marcel! Klaus later confronted Cami about her tryst, but Cami claimed it was mainly his own fault for compelling her to go out with Marcel in the first place. (Lesson learned, Klaus.) However, Klaus warned Cami that the next time he saw Marcel, he was a dead man.
Elijah confronted Klaus for going behind his back with wolves. Elijah was mainly concerned with Hayley of course, and Klaus said his schemes with the wolves were to help her.
After his fight with Klaus, Elijah headed to the bayou to talk to Hayley. However, he just watched her have fun with her pack. Elijah saw how happy she was surrounded by her people and left before she could see him.
At this point, Marcel was hellbent on revenge over Thierry’s death. He promised to avenge his fallen friend. “I will take back our city, even if I have to burn it down first,” he said. And that’s when Marcel decided to wage war on Klaus and Elijah!
Monique went to Genevieve to talk about her horrendous failure at the feast. Monique said it was time for Genevieve to sacrifice herself. Before she could kill her, the ancestors summoned Monique. The ancestors had changed their tune and were going to allow Genevieve to live, in exchange for the murder of Klaus’s child!
What did you think of tonight’s The Originals, HollywoodLifers? Do you think Marcel will be successful in war against Klaus and Elijah? Will the witches really kill Klaus and Hayley’s baby? Let us know!
