Now that they’re competing with each other, are they enemies or are they rooting for each other? Or are they dating? Click to find out what they told us!
Meryl Davis nearly got a perfect score on the April 7 Dancing With The Stars, but will her ex-partner Charlie White beat her to the mirror ball trophy in the end? The Olympians went from being longtime partners to competitors, and are constantly rumored to be lovers! HollywoodLife.com caught up with the duo who’s competing against each other on the dance floor — keep reading for their EXCLUSIVE Q&A!
Meryl Davis & Charlie White: Are The ‘DWTS’ Frontrunners Dating?
Last week’s April 7 first-ever switch-up episode had Meryl Davis and Charlie White switching partners (Meryl with Valentin Chmerkovskiy and Charlie with Peta Murgatroyd), but deep down, they duo is meant for each other! Well, not in that way. “It’s funny because we developed this really comfortable rhythm with each other when we were really young and its really been the key to our partnership,” Meryl EXCLUSIVELY told HollywoodLife.com when we asked if there’s any possibility of a budding romance. “So no, we’re really comfortable with what we have and I think we’re going to stick with it.”
They should also stick with their dance moves because the two frontrunners are headed to the top of Season 18 of Dancing With The Stars! This week, the Olympians will return back to their original dancing pros, but will Meryl and Maksim Chmerkovskiy beat Charlie and Sharna Burgess? According to the duo, the competition is all in good fun and they’re rooting each other on.
“I guess technically speaking, we are competing against each other, but it couldn’t feel further from that,” Meryl told TV Guide. “We really feel like we’re in it together.”
Meryl & Charlie Tell Us All About Their Olympic Journey
It’s obvious that Meryl and Charlie came into the DWTS competition with existing rhythmic talent from that small event we like to call The Olympics. We caught up with the pair right after their big win for P&G’s Thank You Mom campaign, and they told us all about the training that got them to dance on primetime — ice skating at the 2014 Winter Olympics! Meryl and Charlie EXCLUSIVELY told HollywoodLife.com all about their intense skating regimen, their past together and, of course, their big win.
HollywoodLife.com: Your Olympics training was intense! How did that training prepare you for DWTS?
Charlie: “In the weeks leading up [to the Olympics], we were on the ice probably about four hours a day. We’re running through our program from beginning to end, which is probably the hardest thing we do. And then often times we would do that back to back to really get ourselves in shape. [We] get going off ice after a long day and doing cardio and core and plyometric to keep our bodies in shape. There’s really not a minute when you’re not thinking if there something that [I] could be doing to help my chances of winning that gold medal.”
How did you channel the pressure to win into actually winning the gold medal?
Meryl: “I think that we were so well prepared just because we’ve been putting so much pressure on ourselves to perform at our bests since we were young that it didn’t feel like it came out of the blue. We’ve been working our whole lives to get to this point. We really pushed ourselves so it was a place that we were relatively comfortable with.”
Was there a point in your program where you kind of knew that you were home free? Did you ever think you were definitely going to win?
Meryl: “No, definitely not. There are check points that I think we definitely take a deep breath after certain aspects of the program and feel really happy when those parts go well. But I think part of the key to being a successful athlete or performer is to not really ever feel like its over until its really over. So until we were off the ice I don’t think we wever completely let our guards down.”
Do you guys have any plans on going to the next Olympics? Or are you going to retire and do a Stars On Ice type of thing, after DWTS?
Charlie: “We are definitely doing Stars On Ice, but we haven’t decided whether or not we are going to retire. We’re really excited to get home and celebrate. [The] future holds so much but right now we’re just focused on enjoying the moment.”
We’re glad to hear it because we’re enjoying watching their big moments on Dancing With The Stars!
