At the Shorty Awards on April 7, HollywoodLife.com spoke to Matt Walsh, who plays Mike McLintock on ‘Veep’. Read on to find out whether he’d vote for Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Selina Meyer in a presidential election!
Season 3 of Veep premiered April 6 on HBO and the main story arc follows Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and her hapless team as they help her launch a secret campaign for President. It’s going about as well as you’d imagine it would. Read on for our exclusive interview with Matt Walsh and find out if he has any faith at all in Selina’s campaign whatsoever! (Spoiler alert: he kind of doesn’t.)
‘Veep’ — Matt Walsh: Selina Meyer Would Be A ‘Terrible President’
At the Shorty Awards on April 7, we caught up with Matt on the red carpet and just had to ask him some incredibly important questions. Namely, would he vote for Selina for President? “No, never! She’d be a terrible President.” He continued, “She might, in a random moment of brilliance, be good in a crisis, oddly enough, but consistency and vision? No, no.” Matt seemed almost horrified by the prospect.
His character, Mike McLintock, is the Director of Communications for the Office of the Vice President, and he is about as poorly suited for that job as someone can get. We asked Matt if he would ever hire Mike, and he told us, “Probably not. I probably wouldn’t. I’d keep him if he was there for a while, but I wouldn’t hire him.” But would Matt bring him along for a presidential campaign? “No way.” Poor Mike! But honestly, he’s kind of had it coming. He’s been with Selina since she was a Senator, but let’s not forget that this is the man who pretends to have a dog so that he can leave the office sometimes to go walk it.
‘Veep’: Matt Walsh Would Hire Dan For Campaign Manager
As Selina gears up for her presidential bid, Dan (Reid Scott) and Amy (Anna Chlumsky) are in a war with each other for the position of Selina’s campaign manager — which, quite honestly, does not seem like a job anyone would ever want. HollywoodLife.com asked Matt whom he would choose to be his campaign manager, and he told us he’d choose Dan between the two of them!
We’re still on the fence — while Dan is certainly eager and willing to do anything to get ahead, he is the Deputy Director of Communications and once, memorably, told Jonah (Timothy Simons), “What I’m saying, you f****** ape, is that you are a useless waste of f****** carbon. I’ve been trying to cynically use you, but you’re so f******low-rent, you can’t even be exploited.” (Bless, HBO. Bless.) So, his communication skills are less than stellar.
What do you think, HollywoodLifers? Would you vote for Selina Meyer? Would you ever hire Mike McLintock? And who would you choose for campaign manager — Dan Egan or Amy Brookheimer? Let us know!
