Whoa. The penultimate episode of ‘Scandal’ went off like a bomb. Literally. Many of our favorite character’s lives are hanging by a thread, and there’s only the finale left to save them!
The April 10 episode of Scandal set up for an explosive finale. A devastating secret was revealed, B613 and OPA teamed up and Maya’s (Khandi Alexander) deadly bomb threatens the lives of many fan-favorites. Let’s handle this business!
‘Scandal’ Recap: Pow-Wow At OPA
After Olivia (Kerry Washington) shut down B613, everything was bound to go up in flames. In the last episode, Jake (Scott Foley) grabbed Olivia by the throat and screamed, “You just killed the President!”
Scandal picked up right where we left off, with Jake telling Olivia that she had committed treason. Before Olivia could really respond, Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) and Cyrus (Jeff Perry) showed up at OPA! Everyone in the room was angry at Olivia for shutting down B613. They had to handle the Maya Pope situation themselves, because if Homeland Security found out about Maya, then they would find out about Fitz and Operation Remington.
Then, Jake let the cat out of the bag and revealed to everyone that Olivia slept with him just to get information that would shut down B613. (Didn’t anyone ever tell him not to kiss and tell — in front of the President, at least?)
Things got even more awkward when Fitz and Cyrus recognized the bomb maker, and knew they had to call one person to help find him: Rowan Pope (Joe Morton).
According to Rowan, Dominic Bell (Sebastian Roché) was a handler for Maya. Rowan was familiar with his methods. Fitz wanted the situation handled because, you know, he was dealing with the election. He was supposed to go to Ohio, but Rowan and Olivia persuaded him to stay put. Fitz was quick to remind Rowan that he wasn’t Command again. Rowan was fine with that — Dominic had ruined his life and it was Rowan’s turn to ruin his.
Everyone just started showing up to OPA to help take down Maya, including Quinn (Katie Lowes) and Charlie (George Newbern). Rowan said he wasn’t going to help if Jake was there. As always, Olivia chose everyone over Jake. Jake tried to convince Olivia that Rowan had ulterior motives and would take everything that mattered to Olivia. Jake said that being her dad was a just a role Rowan was playing. (Shakespeare said it best, Jake — all the world’s a stage.)
‘Scandal’ Recap: Staying Put
Senator Hightower, a close friend of Fitz’s, passed away and a large funeral was being planned. Fitz believed a eulogy would be powerful, but Olivia warned him to stay put. Fitz was concerned about Sally (Kate Burton) taking votes, including the NAACP, but Olivia assured him that he would keep those votes. She didn’t want anything to happen to Fitz. If Fitz died and her mother killed him, Olivia couldn’t recover from that.
Fitz really wanted to go to Defiance County, Ohio. He’d never actually won a presidential election. Olivia was quick to remind him that Big Jerry was wrong about him not being a leader. She also made it clear that he had to be alive to win an election. Fitz missed Olivia and didn’t want her sleeping with Jake. Olivia avoided that conversation, and got the focus back on the campaign.
Olivia brought the campaign to Fitz at the White House. He was making videos while Mellie (Bellamy Young), Cyrus and Andrew (Jon Tenney) were on the phones. Mellie seemed a little off her game and tipsy while campaigning. With good reason, though.
There was a rumor planted by the Langston team that Mellie had requested a paternity test on Jerry (Dylan Minnette). Leo (Paul Adelstein) even went to Jerry’s prep school and wanted a girl to get Jerry’s DNA in exchange for acceptance into an Ivy League college. Instead of, you know, getting his toothbrush, she had sex with little Jerry and brought the condom back to Leo. Ew.
Leo called Rowan and told him to get Fitz’s DNA, but Rowan was double-teaming and told Olivia about Leo’s plans! Olivia went to straight to the White House to confront Mellie. Olivia wanted to know if Jerry or Karen were Fitz’s or Andrew’s. Olivia reminded Mellie that it was only six days until the election and she had to come clean. Drunk Mellie was in full force and told Olivia that she wanted to hand Fitz the one piece of news that would destroy him. She lamented about the life she sacrificed for Fitz. “It is my turn!” she screamed. Mellie let it slip that Big Jerry may or may not be the father of one of her kids. Mellie was distraught at her own confession and begged Olivia not to tell.
‘Scandal’ Recap: OPA Becomes B613
As much as Olivia tried to prevent it from happening, B613 reconvened at OPA. After a failure on Charlie and Quinn’s part, Huck found Dominic and brought him into OPA. Dominic said he didn’t know where the bomb was, but Rowan didn’t believe him. After some intense interrogation, Huck (Guillermo Díaz) said Dominic didnt know anything.
Olivia knew Rowan was hiding something about Dominic and demanded her father tell her. Turns out, Dominic was the only man Maya ever loved, Rowan said. Rowan loaded one bullet into his gun and forced Dominic to call Maya. He thought she would flinch when it came to Dominic, but Rowan was sadly mistaken. Maya didn’t blink at the fact that Rowan was going to kill Dominic and she hung up before Huck could trace the call. Despite Olivia’s wishes, Rowan killed Dominic!
After months of speculation, a paternity test determined that Jerry was actually the result of Big Jerry raping Mellie. However, Olivia kept that secret buried from everyone by having Abby pay off the DNA doctor.
Olivia called Jake after a long day of lies and murder. She just wasn’t okay. Jake wanted to know if she felt something when they were together because he was convinced she did. Olivia talked about how much easier it must be for Maya not to care about anyone. Olivia told Jake that she loved Fitz, but she did feel something for him. But having those feelings felt like a betrayal to Fitz.
‘Scandal’ Recap: Tick Tock Goes The Bomb
Fitz was losing to Sally because he canceled all his in-person events. He said he’d rather be blown to bits than lose Ohio. (Don’t say that, Fitz!) Against Olivia’s wishes, Fitz and Cyrus boarded the plane to Ohio. However, Rowan made the point that as long as Fitz was near Olivia then he was safe. Maya wouldn’t kill Fitz if it meant killing Olivia.
However, Olivia was still reeling from Rowan killing Dominic and let’s just say, the father-daughter relationship was pretty rocky (as usual). Rowan apologized to Olivia, but he had waited a long time to kill Dominic. Rowan’s whole life was a lie because Dominic was the one who told Maya to marry him. Dominic had stolen Rowan’s life and he enjoyed getting it back.
Harrison (Columbus Short) found the secret hideout of Maya’s and discovered that she knew that Fitz was heading to Defiance. Before he could call Olivia, Adnan (Nazanin Boniadi) held a gun to his head!
While Huck and Charlie bickered, Quinn took care of Dominic’s body. Huck wanted to know for sure that Quinn concealed it properly. But that wasn’t all he wanted. After Quinn slapping Huck in the face three times (because why not?), the two kissed and did the nasty on top of a car, and as they were getting scandalous, Maya walked straight into OPA! Maya strutted into the office and told Rowan, “Bring my baby home.”
As Olivia walked back into OPA upon her return from Defiance, she discovered Rowan on the floor bleeding out!
Much to everyone’s surprise, the bomb was never at Defiance. Jake called Cyrus and revealed that Senator Hightower was actually killed by Maya, as part of her scheme because she needed a place where Fitz would have to go — the funeral. The bomb was at the funeral! Upon discovering the news, Cyrus didn’t call Sally or Leo, but had Fitz stay put. And let Sally or Leo stay put — at the funeral. (Typical Cyrus move.)
Maya set the timer to start the bomb. In addition to Sally and Leo, Andrew was also in attendance. This is not going to end well.
HollywoodLifers, what did you think of tonight’s Scandal? Were you surprised at Jerry’s paternity? Who will survive the bombing? Let us know!
