‘Once Upon A Time’ brought viewers back to Oz to reveal all about Zelena. Not only was The Wicked Witch’s dark past brought to life, but she comes back to face her sister! Keep reading to get the details on Regina and Zelena’s major showdown.
Once Upon A Time In Wonderland wrapped up its final episode on April 3, but Once Upon A Time is in full force and tonight’s April 6 episode was no exception. Long story short, Zelena (Rebecca Mader) faces Regina in an epic battle (Lana Parrilla), The Wicked Witch has major beef with Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) and Regina shows interest in Robin Hood.
‘Once Upon A Time’ — Zelena’s Past Is Revealed
Sunday April 6th’s episode took us all the way back to Oz. The green city opened the first scene, but that’s not what caught our eye. A beautiful baby girl did. But, turns out, she’s not so beautiful on the inside. The infant was found alone in the woods by a couple who took her in, as their own. The woman said she would name her…Zelena.
Fast forward many years, and baby Zelena is all grown up. She’s seen with her father, helping him shave, and when she cuts him, he spins out of control and calls her for what she really is: wicked. He then tells her that after all of these years and now that her mother is gone, he can finally expose the truth. He is not her father. He is simply a man who found her in the woods, years ago. He yells at her for being wicked and she says that she’d rather be wicked than be a drunk like him. Extremely hurt, she then storms out and says she wants to go to a family who actually wants her — and she heads to the Wizard Of Oz.
Neal Is Laid To Rest
Back in Storybrooke, the entire gang is grieving at Neal’s funeral. Emma (Jennifer Morrison) and Henry (Jared Gilmore) have a very tough time at the burial, honoring Neal by shoveling dirt onto his grave.
Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) tells Emma that he will spend time with Henry to help him work through the pain he’s dealing with, after his father’s death. Throughout the episode, Henry and Hook pow-wow, and Henry insists on knowing the truth about his father, despite the fact that he knows that his mom is protecting him by hiding the real facts. Hook puts a flight smile on Henry’s face by telling him that he knows more about his father than he may realize.
Meanwhile, Rumplestiltskin is still being held hostage by Zelena.
Zelena Shows Up In Town — And Faces Her Sister!
After the funeral, Zelena zooms into the diner, and (no surprise here) she’s not filled with compassion on this day of grief. Rather, she’s filled with a vengeance, targeted toward one specific person: Regina.
Zelena walks right up to Regina and challenges her to a fight. Why? Because she’s her sister. Half sisters, to be exact.
“This isn’t the wild west,” Regina tells her sibling, who responds with, “No dear, it’s the Wicked West.” Uh oh! We’re predicting a major showdown.
Zelena’s Complicated Past With Rumplestiltskin Is Revealed
Back in the land of Oz, Zelena faces the Wizard Of Oz who gives her insight into her past. A cyclone struck and brought her to Oz when she was a baby, but she is not her mother’s only child. The Wizard shows Zelena footage of her mother, Cora, and also her sister, Regina.
“Like you, Regina has the gift of magic,” says the Wizard, who then tells her that she has been able to use it because Rumplestiltskin taught her how to use it. Zelena is downright furious that she has a sister, and that her sister has been using her powers for all of these years. Lucky for her, the Wizard granted her with magic slippers.
“When you click your heels together three times, those slippers will take you wherever you desire.” She then clicks her silver, sparkly heels and heads to find Regina and Rumplestiltskin.
Still in the past, when Zelena arrives to Rumplestiltskin, he bumps into her performing magic, and is extremely surprised to meet her and is even more surprised to learn that she is Cora’s first-born daughter. But he then realizes that she is who she says she is, and he’s ready to take her in.
Rumplestiltskin and Zelena enter their first training session. “Magic isn’t about what you see. It’s about what you feel inside,” says Rumplestiltskin. “You’ll have to dig deep, if you want to pass tonight’s test.” He begins to teach her his ways and the two connect on a deep level. Zelena says that the moment she stopped feeling like she wasn’t wanted was when Rumplestiltskin decided to take her in. And just like that, the two a stuck together for life. If only Rumple knew exactly what that meant.
Regina Reads A Telling Letter
Jumping back to the present times, Regina reads a letter, in the company of Emma and Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin). Disturbed by what the letter says, she storms out, clearly very upset by confirmation of her familial ties.
Turns out, Regina admits to Robin Hood that she’s seen the letter hundreds of times before and would refer to it for comfort and solace because she thought it was about her power and greatness — not Zelena’s.
Who Is Zelena Out To Get — Regina Or Rumplestiltskin?
Back in flashback land, Rumplestiltskin is greeted by Zelena who has prepared him a thoughtful meal, but the sincere gesture is quickly overpowered by her jealously when she finds out that Rumplestiltskin is still training Regina with magic. “She’s not nearly as powerful as me,” Zelena bursts, yelling that Regina doesn’t deserve his attention because she is the better sister. And then?
“You insides are starting to show. You’re turning green!” Rumplestiltskin says. “Envy will do that to you.”
And just like that, Zelena’s first moments as the Wicked Witch are brought to life.
Regina And Zelena Face Off For A Major Showdown
It’s the night of the showdown, back in present times, and a green-gloved Zelena shows up for the fight, and boy is she ready to tear it down! “If my sister isn’t here in five minutes, I’m going to let The Dark One off his leash,” she demands. Zelena sure is nasty and now, we understand where she gets it from.
Of course, Regina does show up, and she’s not surrendering in any way. “Didn’t anyone tell you, black is my color?” Regina quips at her sibling (ahh, sisterly love).
Regina is ready to rumble, and makes it clear that she would never miss this showdown. “I couldn’t let my sister off that easily,” she says. “I accepted that we share a mother, yes, but I still have one question, what the hell did I do to you?”
Zelena gives her the reason: “You were born.” (Ouch!) But it quickly becomes very clear that Zelena is extremely jealous of Regina. “You can’t beat me little sis. Everything that Rumple taught you, he taught me too!”
The bloody-good fight continues, and the sisters reach their final moments. Zelena admits, “I didn’t say that I wanted to kill you. I wanted to destroy you.” She then goes in for the kill (aka to grab her heart), but it’s missing! How? Well, Regina says that their mother taught her one thing: never bring your heart to a witch fight.
Regina Gives Her Heart To Robin Hood (Literally)
After the fight, Regina finds her heart, which is safe and sound with Robin Hood (Sean Maguire). She tells him that she wants him to continue to look over it, and when he questions her trust in him with such an important part of herself, she lays on the flirting.
Tinkerbell would be happy that Regina is finally letting herself fall for Robin Hood!
Rumplestiltskin & Zelena: The Battle Is On
The Wicked Witch’s past is revealed in the final moments when she brings a knife to Regina’s throat, back in the day. But surprise! Rumplestiltskin had just disguised himself as Regina. “Consider it a test,” he says, pointing out that she clearly failed. She also disqualified herself in totality because working with magic requires qualities that she does not have, but Regina does. She is too dangerous. Rumple then tells her that Regina got the job.
Flash forward to Storybrooke, and Zelena is still not over Rumplestiltskin’s affinity for Regina.
“You shouldn’t have taught me all of your tricks, Rumplestiltskin. I’ll see you again…the next time, you will choose me.”
Rumplestiltskin tells her that he would still chose Regina, if he had to do it all over again. “What I’m casting isn’t a curse. It’s a second chance!” says Zelena.
Zelena Gets A New Sidekick
Zelena goes back to Oz and asks the Wizard to go back in time to change the past (aka, she is really not over Regina being the better sister). The Wizard tells her that it’s not possible to go back in time, and in the midst of her green fury, Zelena pulls her tricks on the Wizard, ripping down the curtain to see who it really is: Walsh (Covert Affairs‘ Christopher Gorham)!
“I come from a distant land, a place called Kansas,” says Walsh.
Zelena calls him a phony, but Walsh points out that what he does is real because her slippers did, in fact, take her back to the enchanted forest. He also points out that she’s evil (duh), to which she responds, “Not Evil, dear. Wicked.”
He clearly doesn’t know just how wicked she is. She, again, pulls her tricks and turns him into her “trained circus animal,” a flying monkey!
Before the episode wraps, with her new sidekick along her side, Zelena proclaims, “When I’m done, Regina, you’ve never even been born.”
