On April 6, the 2014 Academy of Country Music Awards were filled with funny hosts, incredible performances, and big wins.
2014 ACM Awards — Best Moments
The best part of that performance? Seeing all of the front row A-listers of country music — including Taylor Swift, Miranda Lambert, and Carrie Underwood — with confetti in their hair! Thankfully, none of the lovely ladies seemed too upset about it. After all, they did just rock out to The Band Perry!
“If you don’t like live music, you can go see Britney Spears down the street,” host Blake said to the audience, making a dig at the queen of pop music’s Las Vegas residency at Planet Hollywood. I guess he didn’t realize that her little sister, Jamie-Lynn Spears, was sitting in the audience. Yikes!
The first hour of the ACM was packed with performances, including a poolside party courtesy of Brad Paisley. While taking pictures of his bikini-clad audience, he gave a fun performance of “Riverbank.” Other performances included Eric Church, Lee Brice, Justin Moore, and Florida Georgia Line.
One legendary country music singer introduced another when Martina McBride took the stage to bring out her old friend, George Straight!
Of course, Blake’s performance with his The Voice co-coach Shakira was a wonderful close to the first hour of the ACM Awards. Their romantic performance of “Medicine” had the audience clapping along in sync the whole time!
Justin Moore Wins Fan Voted ‘Artist Of The Year’
To kick off the second hour, Taylor Swift presented the first award of the night — “Vocal Duo.” Of course, it went to Florida Georgia Line!
It what appears to be a new awards ceremony trend thanks to Ellen DeGeneres, Blake and Luke attempted to recreate the now infamous Oscar selfie. After scanning the front row and deciding they are too afraid to ask George Straight, the hosts eventually agree that they are the “most famous” people in the arena and take a selfie by themselves. Too funny!
Lady Antebellum put on an incredible performance of “Rhiannon” with their special guest, Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks.
Florida Georgia Line came back on stage to present the highly anticipated fan-voted “New Artist of the Year” award to – drum roll please – Justin Moore!
Daft Punk made a surprising appearance — well, no, just kidding! It was just hosts Blake and Luke wearing motorcycle helmets. Clever!
Even though she was clapping, Taylor Swift looked mighty surprised that Miranda Lambert won the award for “Single Record of the Year.” Miranda followed up her win with a performance of “Automatic.”
Lee Brice‘s win for “I Drive Your Truck” allowed the songwriters Jessi Alexander and Connie Harrington to give an emotional thank you speech that didn’t leave a dry eye in the house.
Performances by Keith Urban, Luke Bryan, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Jason Aldean kept the audience bopping and swaying throughout the second hour of the show.
George Straight Takes “Entertainer of the Year”
Carrie Underwood looked stunning while presenting to “Male Vocalist of the Year” to Jason Aldean, who could not have been more thrilled to accept his statue.
George Straight and Jerry Jones took the stage to make a HUGE announcement together. The 2015 Academy of Country Music Awards, the 50th anniversary of the show, will be held at the home of the Dallas Cowboys — AT&T Stadium in North Texas. Awesome!
The Band Perry gave an inspiring speech when they won for “Vocal Group of the Year,” quoting their grandfather who supported them when they began over 15 years ago.
Hunter Hayes and Jewel teamed up to spread the word about their quest to end child hunger. Because of the proceeds from Hunter’s hit song “Invisible,” he has been able to provide over 500,000 meals to hungry kids in America. After Jewel’s presentation, Hunter performed the incredible song, which he said was for anyone who has ever felt alone.
When Miranda Lambert won “Female Vocalist of the Year,” Sheryl Crow runs over to give her a big hug. What a sweet moment!
“I just want to say, I’m really proud to be a woman representing country music,” Kacey Musgraves said during her empowering speech for winning “Album of the Year.”
Country music legend Garth Brooks paid tribute to and old-school legend Merle Haggard by introducing Miranda Lambert and George Straight’s performance.
After the performance, Garth got the entire venue to sing “Happy Birthday” to Merle as he walked on stage because it was his 77th birthday. Amazing!
Our handsome hosts joked that their ACM Awards hosting gig was actually an audition to replace David Letterman. Nice one, guys!
Two powerhouse performers took the stage together when Dierks Bentley and Sheryl Crow rocked out for their duet, “I Hold On.” Sheryl’s sparkly pants definitely stole the show though.
Since the show was broadcast live on CBS, NCIS stars LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell took the stage to present the night’s biggest award: “Entertainer of the Year.”
The award of course went to George Straight, who definitely deserved it after an epic 30 year career in country music!
Performances by Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan, Toby Keith, Hunter Hayes, Darius Rucker, Rascal Flatts, all kept the show going with awesome performances in the third hour.
