On the last night of PaleyFest in LA on March 28, Ryan Murphy announced on the ‘American Horror Story: Coven’ panel that Michael Chiklis has signed on to star in ‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ and will act opposite ‘Coven’ favorite Kathy Bates as her ex-husband!
It’s official: a new casting decision has been made for Ryan Murphy‘s latest offering, American Horror Story: Freak Show, and the creator revealed on March 28 at PaleyFest in LA that Michael Chiklis is officially on board! He will be playing the father of Evan Peters‘ character, and the ex-husband of Kathy Bates‘. We wonder how that family dynamic will play out! Read on to find out who else you can expect on the new season.
‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ Casts Michael Chiklis As Kathy Bates’ Ex-Husband
The fourth season will take place in the 1950s in Jupiter, Florida, in one of the last operating freak shows in the United States. Also on board — for her last season — is the incredible Jessica Lange, who will play a German ex-pat. Earlier this year, HollywoodLife.com theorized that we would see Nazi Germany play a part in the upcoming season — and it doesn’t look like we were too far off!
Also on board for Freak Show are Sarah Paulson, Angela Basset, and Frances Conroy. Emma Roberts, Gabourey Sidibe and Denis O’Hare are also set to appear, but it’s not yet clear in what capacity. We sure hope that Emma and Gabourey will be regulars — they were really in their element as actresses on Coven.
‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ Will Take Place In The 1950s
Ryan told Entertainment Weekly after the finale of Coven that — then-untitled — Freak Show would be “a combination of things. It’s a combination of two time periods, with the main one being the 1950s.” A bit vague, but to be fair, they hadn’t started writing the season yet. He continued, “I like that we had a lot of comedy in this year, and I like the comic characters, so I think that will remain.” Who doesn’t like a little comedy with their horror? Kind of balances out all that endless despair — we could have used a little comedy in Season 2’s Asylum.
Ryan told the PaleyFest audience that Michael’s reaction to the news that the part was his was: “I’m terrified and I’m going to do it.” We hear you, Michael — we’re terrified, but we’re certainly going to watch it.
Michael Chiklis is best known for his starring role as Detective Mic Vackey in The Shield, and has been found more recently in short-lived TV shows such as No Ordinary Family and Vegas.
