Alex Preston Needs To Be The Next ‘American Idol’

Thu, March 20, 2014 11:04am EDT by 18 Comments

Alex Preston has been a frontrunner on the 13th season of ‘American Idol’ since the beginning, but his performance of ‘Story Of My Life’ by One Direction proved that he has the chops to take home the title. Do you agree?

We’ve been huge fans of Alex Preston since his first appearance on American Idol‘s Season 13, where he sang an original song titled “Fairy Tales.” Choosing an original song is always a risky move and it often doesn’t pay off, but even though the judges weren’t wild about his song choice, his incredible talent shined through. That said, he’s been killing it in the finals since they started, but his performance of One Direction‘s “Story Of My Life” on the March 19 episode of Idol put him at the forefront of the competition. We’re only in the Top 10 and it might be too early to say it, but I think that Alex will be — and needs to be — our next American Idol.

Alex Preston Needs To Win ‘American Idol’ Season 13

‘American Idol’ Recap: Alex Preston Wows Judges With ‘Story Of My Life’

Alex’s performances during the finals have always been very consistently good — and while he hasn’t always necessarily nailed it, he always takes in what the judges have to say with a level head and is even better the next time. For example, when he performed Gavin DeGraw‘s “I Don’t Wanna Be,” the judges told him that they didn’t like his arrangement choice for the song.

So, he stepped it up the next week with a performance of “Falling Slowly,” by Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova — and killed it. His vocals, ownership of the stage, and arrangement were all on point. Finally, with last night’s “Story Of My Life,” it became clear that Alex has gotten into the Idol groove. Already a very talented performer, Alex will only continue to improve as the competition goes on.

Jena Irene Might Also Win The Title Of ‘American Idol’

Furthermore, who else could possibly win the Idol title? MK Nobilette has a huge fanbase but her performances have been all over the map. Sam Woolf and Jena Irene may be Alex’s biggest competition, but Sam — as cute as he is — can be quite timid and his performances don’t always carry. I think Jena is fantastic, but America is not on my level about her, for some reason. Don’t get me wrong — if Jena wins the title, I will still be super pleased.

Alex, however, seems to have the whole American Idol package that America is looking for — and we really hope that he makes it to the end!

What do you think, HollywoodLifers? Is it Alex for the win? Jena? Or is there another finalist that has your vote? Be sure to vote and to comment below!

Yes Alex has a good voice . In a Chris Isack type of way . But the guy has no stage presence. At this point he should be a performer and deliver. The two contestants who have the whole package are 1) Caleb Johnson 2) Jena Irene . If America gets it right it should be close between those two.

Are you bloody serious? Caleb Johnson is a fierce performer with pipes reaching deep down and further out than the meek albeit pitch perfect vocals of Alex. Alex gives good yet very forgettable performances.
All it would take for Caleb to ice this thing is a gut wrenching version of a Bob Seger’s “Down on Main St.” Choosing Alex over Caleb would be tantamount to Chris Allen’s having won in favor of Adam Lambert, a far superior artist.

preach it, bruthuh! If Caleb, for some bizarre reason, gets eliminated, I stop watching AI. And the only thing as dumb as Kris Allen beating Adam Lambert was Daughtry not making it to the end.

Not a fan of Lambert, although talented. Kris was a deserving winner. He evolved as a brilliant song stylist and adorable hunk as that season progressed. And love his recorded music. Listen to it. Daughtry came off as one trick pony and annoying about mid-season with on stage song delivery, although he was my original pick that year. He records some awesome hits, mind you, but I bore of him quickly onstage even now. On AI, winning plays out as a drama, and not as a talent competition, many years . So stop belly aching and snarking. Most of the top 5 any year deserve a listen! AI is about making interesting tv…period. (And I have loved it!)

Caleb is a super talented singer. But, versatile? Not so much. He isn’t really a musician yet, just a singer, and mostly a singer of loud rock songs. Don’t get me wrong–Caleb totally kills it on stage every time! But he isn’t an artist on a par with Alex.
