An American mother who stabbed her 3 young children to death during a nasty custody battle with her estranged husband, has now committed suicide. So sad.
Theresa Riggi was serving a 16-year prison sentence for brutally murdering her three small children in Edinburgh, Scotland when she was found dead in her hospital room on March 10.
Mother Kills Herself After Murdering 3 Children
Theresa Riggi, 49, the mother who stabbed her three children, Austin and Luke, 8, and Cecilia, 5, during a bitter custody battle with her estranged husband Pasquale in 2010 was found dead of an apparent suicide in her Rampton Secure Hospital room on Monday, March 10. A spokesperson for the hospital declared the death “unexplained but non-suspicious.”
The murderous mother stabbed her three children inside her second-story flat in Edinburgh, Scotland after telling their father, Pasquale, that he should “say goodbye” to them during a terrifying phone call. After laying their three little bodies out side-by-side, Theresa staged a gas explosion inside of the flat and then jumped off of the balcony in an attempt to kill herself.
In April 2011, Theresa pleaded guilty to murdering her three children and was sentenced to 16 years in Cornton Vale, a women’s prison.
Defense Claims Theresa ‘Loved’ Her Children ‘Too Much’
During the 2011 murder trial at high court in Glasglow, Theresa’s defense declared that she was not mentally ill and instead loved her children “too much.” However, Lord Bracadale — the “judge” — disagreed and served Theresa with what he felt was an appropriate sentence for her “grotesque” acts.
The number and nature of the stab wounds to each child is indicative of a truly disturbing degree of violence, which, in order to bring about the deaths of three children, must have been sustained over a significant period of time,” Lord Bracadale explained before delivering his sentencing terms. “It is clear that any degree of responsibility for such ghastly and grotesque acts must be visited with a lengthy sentence of imprisonment.”
The children’s father, Pasquale, spoke out about the heavy loss of his children during a speech outside of the courtroom following Theresa’s sentence.
“There is no justification for this heinous crime, repeated three times, nor is there any sentence that can provide justice for the overwhelming loss of three lives and the subsequent painful grief and devastation caused to surviving family and friends,” the scorned father read during his emotional speech.
A truly tragic ending to an incredibly sad story.
