It’s definitely a red herring after piecing together the whole Vesuvius thing. There would be no other reason to name that episode that and the whole thing definitely seems like something Bays and Thomas would do. They know that they have certain fans who will piece that together and become very excited!

They’re making it way too obvious. That’s my only problem with supporting this theory. Bays and Thomas have stated that they are aware of it and now they throw in this big obvious winking hint. I really think that it’s a way of distracting the fans so they won’t see what’s actually coming. They want us to think she’s dead.

What’s Barney’s stock and trade? Misdirection.

Here’s some support for the mother gets ill story- but makes it alive: Gary Blauman Theory.
In ‘The Chain of Screaming’ Barney states that Blauman died, but it turns out that Barney’s story about Blauman was fictional- as we see Blauman still alive in ‘Sorry, Bro’ and ‘Jenkins’. ‘Gary Blauman’ is the title of the episode on March 17th- that title could be a simile for thinking the mother is dead, but she actually isn’t. Monday’s episode was also titled ‘Vesuvius’- which was used as a crossword clue that Ted thought he had right in ‘Coming Back’- but in the end, Vesuvius just didn’t fit- possibly a connection to the idea that the mom dying doesn’t fit. Could the clue be in the names of the episodes??

I really like (like?) the theory that Robin is dead by 2030. Maybe this is why Ted starts his story to his kids from when he met her – showing his kids how important Aunt Robin was to him becoming the man he needed to be, and meeting the mother. Robin isn’t in the flash forwards; she had a relationship with Ted’s kids (the drawings they made, going to the zoo with Aunt Robin, etc.) in the past but nothing recent, and you never know – maybe Robin & Barney had an unexpected pregnancy (there was a phase where Barney was super into the idea of having kids) and had a baby, and something happened to her? She died while giving birth due to the complications that led her to believe she couldn’t have kids in the first place? Barney is now dad to a little girl?
Just throwing it out there…

Is nobody at all asking why the episode is named after a volcano? Am I missing something here?

In “Coming Back” when Ted is doing the crossword, he says “Vesuvius! Boo yah. Wait that doesn’t fit.” The title of this episode is Vesuvius. The indication that the mother is dead is a red herring. It doesn’t fit.

I have never seen even 15 seconds of this show (sorry, I always thought it was a dumb concept) so maybe I shouldn’t comment, but I can’t help wondering why this is such a surprise to people?? Why did no one considered that possibility before?? I Myself, when I heard the show concept, figured that in the end the fabled mother would turn out to be dead. Makes sense…the father shares all these memories with the kids of a mother they never knew but would’ve gotten a kick out of if they had. Right? Good luck fans-I hope you get the ending your hearts desire.

No, the kids know her – there was an episode a week or two ago showing the Mom with a hangover as the kids rush in for morning cuddles.

It seems like either The Mom has died or Ted’s Mom has died or otherwise did not go to their wedding (she did dress him as a girl when he was a kid, and he has a girl’s middle name). If it’s The Mom, that will totally suck, but it will make the episode where he wishes he had an extra 45 days with her make more sense.
