‘Scandal’ returned last night and Mellie went out with a bang! Literally. The First Lady finally has a love interest on the campaign trail, and I say, go get him, girl!
Is the election about to get rocked with another cheating Scandal? It seems so, and this time, it has nothing to do with rigging the votes. Last night’s midseason premiere was a grand affair for Olivia (Kerry Washington) and Fitz (Tony Goldwyn), but the episode ended with an introduction to the President’s running mate — also known as Mellie’s (Bellamy Young) suitor!
Mellie Deserves A Man
Disclaimer: Let me start off by saying that I do not condone love affairs, cheating or even extramarital flirting, in any way, ever. Except on TV. So now, let’s proceed— sorry, Gladiators, but Scandal is not real life! — and discuss why the First Lady deserves to have her first romantic rendezvous.
She’s put up with her cheating husband, in the public eye.
Yes, Mellie absolutely has her own motives for sticking by Fitz’s side, but still, she has stayed with him and that must take a toll on a lady. She knows exactly what’s going on behind closed doors in the Oval Office — last night’s episode opened with Olitz making out, and Mellie walked right in on them. She’s not outing Olitz, all in the name of her husband’s presidency. (And maybe her status, too — she did, after all, tell Olivia that she has worked hard for her husband’s presidency.)
We all love-to-hate Olivia, but Mellie really must hate that she has to pretend to love her.
How great was that ladies who lunch scene? You could cut that tension with a butter knife! Olivia is the series’ heroine and she can do no wrong in my eyes (even if she’s sleeping with the POTUS), but I feel for Mellie who’s now stuck with Olivia for the entirety of the campaign. Last night, it was revealed that OPA is officially tapped to work with the Grant administration, as he races to his re-eelection. Anything to remain First Lady for another four years, but good for Mellie — she handed Olivia a heaping portion of “eff you” right on a silver platter with a list of suitors that she would be required to date, in order to fool the paparazzi. Oh yeah, Olivia is now “dating” Jake Ballard again.
Not only is Fitz having an affair, but Mellie’s had her share of affairs with Fitz’s dad!
One of the most shocking moments of Season 3 flashed back to Fitz and Mellie’s early days. Unfortunately, they weren’t the only two lovebirds enjoying their honeymoon faze. The future President’s awful father did some pretty awful things to Mellie. Like father like son? Mellie deserves to have a man chase after her heart — not after her lady parts or other women.
Everyone else has been in the sack, at one point or another.
Poor Mellie! Everyone from the White House to OPA has been hot and heavy for at least a hot second, throughout the series. Olivia and Fitz. Olivia and Jake. Olivia and Senator Edison Davis. (Jeez, Olivia!) Abby and David. Cyrus and James. James and Mr. Langston? Quinn and Charlie. And now, even Harrison and his lady love. It’s just not fair!
Bellamy Young has stolen the show this season. Can you imagine her acting prowess, once a man steals her heart?
Bellamy‘s Mellie is a force to be reckoned with. Throw in a little bit of love, and she’s bound for greatness. Throw in her husband’s handpicked Vice Presidential running mate, and she’s bound for perfection. I can’t wait to see the handsome and suave Andrew Nichols (Jon Tenney) prove to Mellie that she’s the one who got away. I also can’t wait for Fitz to find out — and for Mellie to throw it in his face.
HollywoodLifers, aka Gladiators, what do you think about Mellie’s new love interest? Should she have an affair with Andrew Nichols or should she stay true to Fitz?
